For years, I've long said that climate.gov's team of remarkable communicators (& their amazing blogs, which were accessible but did not "dumb down" the science!) was NOAA's best (& most cost effective!) public-facing extreme #weather / #climate education effort to date. This will be a huge loss.

Tired in Tornado Alley
A crucial National Weather Service office, battered by cuts, is trying to put on a brave face as tornado season peaks.
This is one the most authentic, frustrating, and alarming inside looks at what pressure, cuts and "forced" retirement have done to a critical National Weather Service forecast office. Worth a read to illustrate what many of us have been saying

St. Louis Tornadoes Highlight Weather Serviceβs Life-Saving Mission
Tornadoes striking densely-populated St. Louis is a reminder of why the National Weather Service is so vital even as they struggle with understaffed offices.
βWe must not forget what the βSβ in NWS stands for - Service. Whether you are in a rural community or a big city, their service is unwavering when they have the appropriate resources.
No your app canβt replace them. Your app depends on their service too.β

Itβs important to contextualize this. That it was staffed fully is good. That the employees even have to worry about staffing is terrible. NWS Offices should be empowered to do their job to the fullest, not scramble to staff up hours or days ahead of crisis. That is NO way to run an organization.

The thing about tools like cli-MATE and ACIS is not that the data won't exist (not yet at least). It's that they make getting the information you want so...efficient.
Can I write some code to do the same task? Sure, but not everyone can, and why should we need to when a great tool already exists?

46,000 users are registered for cli-MATE. As of tomorrow, those 46,000 users will no longer have access to this tool for data analyzation.

One of a meteorologistβs biggest pet peeves is βmy app says itβll be ____β. Weather apps can miss so many details that a meteorologist will know.
Letβs use tomorrow in NYC β my app says itβll be 78 degrees but rainy. But is that the full story? Spoiler alertβ¦ no, itβs not!
