Writing horror and loving heavy metal has been so at odds with how people perceive me that it has long been my rebellion. I loved seeing kids faces when they found out!

I feel like it would be hard to store your owls in there, but otherwise it looks amazing.

03.12.2025 20:07 β π 5 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I have a collection of Christmas stories called YULETIDE THRILLS. Starts light and gets dark. I tell everyone else to start at the beginning and stop when it gets too dark, but y'all should start at the end and stop when it gets too light.

As would I, I'm still trying to figure out how she gets the owls to go in the box. Mine just fly away.
03.12.2025 20:05 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0I'll leave you with this possibly true conversation with Matt, #horrorwriterschat..
"Martin..."
"Shhh. Remember when you found the holy grail and used it to save Sean Connery?"
"I didn't do--"
"Yup, and that time you stopped the T-1000 from killing John Conner?"
"I... I was kinda bad ass."
"Always."
I was in that dark space myself for awhile. I'm glad you came out again, at least a little. #horrorwriterschat
03.12.2025 19:57 β π 6 π 2 π¬ 0 π 0That's the truth. My stories are a way to resist & to counter the cruel "vibe shift" in current culture. The kind of atmosphere that dominates the other place is the kind I resist, & my protagonists are often underdogs who overcome & triumph against their oppressors.

Hey there, I'm Opal. I wrote horror, romance, fantasy, and sci fi, with a focus on dark and LGBTQIA+ themes.
I didn't really know Matt, but this community has helped me realize just how many writers there are out there willing to lift each other up.

Horror is a way for me to process my own fears and anxieties and, aptly, grief. Iβve gotten through some dark times in my life through my writing. I hope my words can bring comfort to others who have experienced similar darkness.

Completely. He was a rebel. Especially when he took on the death star *without* using his targeting computer. *shaking my head* The man will forever be a legend.
03.12.2025 19:57 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0#HorrorWritersChat Question 4: My book. For anyone unaware, I'm writing a sequel to the Universal adaptation of Dracula from 1931. It's Public Domain in 2027, and God willing I'll self-publish on New Years Day! Shorten copyright protections! 95 years is absurd!

Many of the darker elements of my sleep paralysis & dreams have been woven into my stories. In particular, my novella 'See You Later' was entirely inspired by my night terrors. Writing-wise, I have already met my dream by publishing some stories and attracting a few readers.π
#HorrorWritersChat Acting. You can make a line say or do anything, but a truly good performance makes people think about it hours and can change the whole performance.
Art, in any form, is an act of rebellion - if you can reach with your soul and touch another soul, you've done something profound.
#HorrorWritersChat Q4
Some pieces I write only for myself, channeling rage or whatever feelings I'm overwhelmed by.
Writing can be my therapy, and at those times I'm in complete control and the world cannot intrude without my permission.
Rebellion imo is denying what the world seeks to impose on us
Writing horror is this for me. I tell the stories of those who have been silenced. I point fingers at those who have positioned themselves beyond reproach. My stories might be fiction, but they speak to an uncomfortable reality. Telling the truth is the ultimate act of rebellion.

I wood like to know more about the wood kits. :)
03.12.2025 19:52 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I had a dream about one of my "Good Bones" characters being deep underwater and trying to fight her way to the surface. I figured that if my brain was just going to GIVE me something like that I had to use it, so it's in the manuscript.

I really enjoy tackling taboos - BUT in the service of a greater good. Not just for the sake of it. I want to shake the reader up, cause discomfort, so that I can go on to say βnow that I have your attentionβ¦β
We should be transgressive, people! Itβs in the job description.
I write books. I write books no one will ever read. I have a stack of books almost half a Martin tall. If this isn't an act of rebellion against big ink then I don't know what is.
