Automated university systems โ€˜make administrative burden worseโ€™ Risk-averse mindset, fervour for meetings and โ€˜time sinkโ€™ labour-saving ploys leave everybody overburdened, finds Melbourne study

Automated systems are โ€œa complete and utter nightmareโ€ for university staff, exacerbating rather than easing administrative burdens by trapping academics in a logjam of service requests, an Australian survey has found

๐Ÿšจ UK universities are giving everyone a 2.1% real terms pay cut, as VCs take an average ยฃ340,000. A 1.4% "uplift" when inflation is 3.5%.

๐Ÿ“‰ Worse, UCU's incumbent has no vision, no strategy, no ability to explain the rip-off, after real term cuts over 25% since 2010๐Ÿ‘‡

I donโ€™t think anyone is prepared for what they just did w/ ICE.

This is not a simple budget increase. It is an explosion - making ICE bigger than the FBI, US Bureau of Prisons, DEA,& others combined.

It is setting up to make whatโ€™s happening now look like childโ€™s play. And people are disappearing.

The UK also does not know how ventilation works. Most windows only open a crack and there's no forced air. It can get much warmer inside a building than outside.

As someone who has reported on AI for 7 years and covered China tech as well, I think the biggest lesson to be drawn from DeepSeek is the huge cracks it illustrates with the current dominant paradigm of AI development. A long thread. 1/

The loss is a bit fictitious no? Even if grants are only funded at 80%, there is still a huge amount of overhead that is covered.

Scientific poster with dark-blue background. Title: Flow Annealed Importance Sampling Bootstrap meets differentiable particle physics. The poster contains multiple sections: Generation of data in particle physics, normalizing flows, training approaches, and results for a 2D distribution (lambda_c^+ decay) and a 8D distribution (top production). Additionally, results for the efficiency over the number of target evaluations are shown.

Nihar analyzed a large number of public LVK events. The models are expensive, making the study impossible using conventional techniques. Instead, Nihar used our simulation-based inference code, DINGO, which uses neural networks for rapid results. He double checked results using importance sampling.

Posterior probability distributions for three GW events (GW190701, GW200129, GW200208), showing nonzero eccentricity.

Posterior probability distributions for three GW events (GW190701, GW200129, GW200208), showing nonzero eccentricity.

๐Ÿ”‘ Main result: We find evidence that three GW eventsโ€”GW190701, GW200129, GW200208โ€”are eccentric. This is shown in their posterior probability distributions, where the eccentricity parameter is well away from zero. These plots compare observational data to our theoretical models.

๐ŸšจThis paper led by @nihar-gupte.bsky.social has gone somewhat under the radar since posting, but it deserves attention:
* It's the first paper to provide solid evidence for eccentricity in three LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA black hole binaries.
* It was only possible thanks to AI-accelerated inference tools.
