Photo of The Husband and I on our wedding day, laughing in front of the Brooklyn Bridge π he's wearing a great blue suit, I'm in a strapless gown and holding a vibrant bouquet, and my hair is all blowing in the wind hehe
Aaay it was just pointed out to me that Loving v. Virginia was decided on this day in 1967
Shout out to the case that recognized my and The Husband's constitutional right to get married almost two months ago, and to actually treating the Reconstruction Amendments with some respect
That book made it easier for me to see relationships between braiding as communication technology, as a site of collaboration between the braider and person who's hair is being braided, and code.
Afro-Colombian braiding traditions. Braids as maps, warnings, intention, risk management, collaboration
100% of the products tested had carcinogens. 9 out of 10 has lead. A protective hairstyle should not lead to premature death.
Synthetic hair is not regulated by the FDA. Between this, carcinogins in relaxers and in hair dyes, there seems to be no regard at all for Black women's health.

It involves a mass slave escape, Government-sponsored slut-shaming, my nomination for the Blackest name in history & the guy who discovered two words that might end racism.
A thread.
It took several months to get through the transcription but happy to have gotten it done for #BlackHistoryMonth.

We dive into this slave legislation in a blog post showing its relevance today and why some things just don't seem to change 165 years after the law was made.
Happy to announce the transcription of the DC Slave Code of 1860 is complete!
I hope to publish this on @slavecodes.org before the end of #BHM

To further substantiate this, here is a link to 32 British pieces of Slave Legislation on baptism. In the de jure sense, it was law to baptize slaves as an attempt to stop indigenous African religions from being practiced.

"Despite a white-washed version of the story portraying d'Iberville as a curious explorer, an honest rendering reveals the French werenβt just bringing a sweet cake to Louisiana but also ships carrying enslaved African people."

The Collins machete story was intriguing!
"no minister ... within this colony and dominion, shall hereafter wittingly presume to marry a white man with a negro or mulatto woman; or to marry a white woman with a negro or mulatto man,.." -October 1705 Virginia Annex of Laws
Undoing Loving v. Virginia would take us back centuries.
It was usually one of the first laws in a corpus of slave codes to baptize the enslaved.
You'll find that to be the case in most every slave code.

2. The only reason the Irish (& other European immigrant groups) are now considered white is b/c your assimilation into whiteness was necessary to bolster your Census numbers for political power.
Itβs part of why Census categories change every 10 years through history.
The Development of Mastery and Race in the Comprehensive Slave Codes of the Greater Caribbean during the Seventeenth Century - Edward B. Rugemer "The assembly deployed a relatively new word, white, in its Servant Act of 1681, a change that illuminates the continued efforts of the English in the Caribbean to racialize slavery. Previous servant acts had consistently used the term Christian to refer to European indentured servants, but Jamaicaβs 1681 Servant Act dropped Christian in favor of white. As previously discussed, the Barbados Assembly in its 1661 comprehensive acts made clear distinctions between βChristian servantsβ and βNegro slaves.β But though Barbadians had begun to articulate the language of race in their description of the βNegro,β the law had not employed the term white. The word white as a description of Europeans had emerged gradually and inconsistently.
To support #2 - Oliver Cromwell's conquest of Ireland led to Irish indentured servants across Jamaica, Barbados, and elsewhere. Colonists used a new term - white - instead of christian to distinguish indentured servants from (christianized) enslaved blacks to remove ambiguity of rights between them.

Would it be cool to connect and talk about slave codes sometime?
American history is an uncomfortable truth.
This is the kind of white fragility that washes away the harsh reality of our past and if we cannot face it, then we are bound to repeat the atrocities and injustices we've committed.
Shame on the leadership of the national archives.
