Separating the art from the artist is an intellectual exercise, not a get-out-of-shit-free card. You can't just stamp a man as "separated from the art" and move on. It's a useful tool for thinking about these situations, but the fact is these situations suck and continue to suck.

And of course he's not alone, he's a big example, but there have been plenty of other monsters in those fields. Removing him does not usefully solve a systemic problem.

I know we're long past the "mourn the art" phase of this particular story, but I'm ashamed to say it did take until moving house to un-shelve my Sandman Absolute Editions and box them up in the basement.
