Yeah, sure, I'd have volunteered to get up at 4:30 AM to hit the track. In December. After probably having not gotten to sleep until after 1.

I would have had a damn breakdown.

High school already started at 7:25 for me. 6:30 when I was taking advanced-placement physics. (I dropped that class.)

A headline from the NYT-affiliated sports site The Athletic:

"In a MLB offseason with some outside-the-box hires, there's risk in getting too cute"

Accompanied by a photo of Craig Stammen, the new San Diego Padres manager, wearing a Padres T-shirt and baseball hat.

Spotted this in the New York Times ('s sports partner/subsidiary[?] site) and immediately recalled this thread. An example in the wild:

One of the first X-ray photographs, an exposure of the left hand of Rontgen's wife. You can see her four finger, the dark mass of a ring on her ring finger, and the faint shadow of the soft tissue.

Wilhelm Röntgen discovered X-rays #OTD in 1895 when he noticed that emanations from a Crookes tube caused a platino-barium screen to fluoresce. The rays exposed photographic plates but were blocked by bone and metal.

This early plate shows his wife's hand. 🧪 ⚛️

Just sounds so tritely and grossly porny to me.

Nah, you're not being unfun, I'm dismayed and more surprised than I probably should be that people are using that phrase out loud like that.

“Do you know how to read?”
“No. It is one of the black arts.”
He nodded. “But a useful one,” he said.

I solved the Saturday 11/08/2025 New York Times Daily Crossword in 10:48! www.nytimes.com/crosswords/g...

(Repost of a comment I deleted because I attached an old meme that I then discovered was not pertinent. I feel old.)

Sinead and GI Jane -- and lots of other shaved-headed women I've met -- are both badass and pretty. Good club to be in, in that regard. :)

/r/baseball has world-class bored offseason shitposting every year, all winter long, in case you have never sampled it. It's not baseball itself but it is diverting sometimes. :)

If you have a regional accent, please never try to get rid of it. Accents tell stories.

I mean, people dance to that with giant steps anyway.

Yeah. The Yankees "suck." My home baseball team, the Angels, objectively do suck. Hitler demands a bit stronger condemnation, no?

Yeah--I thought you were mixing things up and bringing in the Irish *language* as distinct from Irish *accents* in English. If I misunderstood you, then I stand down and also plead insufficient coffee.

A separate and totally valid point. There isn't just one Irish accent, and though I could happily listen all day long to most of the Irish folks I know read the phone book, I have heard some that I would struggle to find sexy.

Drive-by reader here. I appreciate your pedantry and would absolutely back your point if the OP hadn't used the word "accent."

Ample, even. Or abundant. I hadn't yet had enough coffee to pinpoint the perfect synonym.

It’s 6 November, and you know what that means, don’t you? YES, THAT’S RIGHT. It’s the 156th anniversary of the death of Dante Gabriel Rossetti’s pet wombat
