This is a great example of the value of having local photojournalists - who could realize the value of the Grain Belt sign in the background and know where to be to line up the shot. And it's the kind of detail that's so meaningful to those of us from MN, but doesn't take away from the overall image

This happened to my grandfather once when he was young, and as a result I and most of my relatives usually leave half an hour early for any appointment "because there might be a train, ya know"

'How to Talk Minnesotan' author Howard Mohr dies at 83 Mohr’s tongue-in-cheek guide to the state’s quirky culture included segments on β€œThe Power of the Negative” and the β€œMinnesota Long Goodbye.” It’s considered a classic of Minnesota humor.

This is the late, great Howard Mohr BTW.

A squinting young pitcher in a minor league uniform (future Oakland perfect-game pitcher Dallas Braden) watches a local politician in dark glasses, slacks and a polo shirt (future President Barack Obama) throw out the first pitch. Decent form.

(Because we're snobs. But also, Target wasn't very nice back then.) G.D. Dayton's grandson Ken, the last family member to work there, was a patron of the arts, especially the Minnesota Orchestra, as well as the board chair of American Public Radio, and he would have forgiven KDFC, I'm sure.

1902 was the year when George Draper Dayton opened his first department store in downtown Minneapolis. Target was an offshoot of Dayton's; its first store opened in Roseville, MN in 1962. (My family moved nearby in 1965, but we usually went back to downtown St Paul to shop at Dayton's.)

I'm sure all other expat Minnesotans listening to KDFC in the Bay Area winced along with me just now when Lara Downes was backannouncing a Scott Joplin piece by talking about other highlights of the year it was published, 1902, and said it was the year when "the first Target store opened" 1/2

For the 'BART Pony,' Riding on Train Was Work, Not Play | KQED A miniature horse called Sweets became a social media darling after appearing on BART earlier this week. The ride was part of the horse's training for its future role as service animal.

I'm in favor of more live shaming by train operators and station agents. My second-favorite BART moment is being on the platform at Rockridge when a voice boomed overhead "This is a message for the GROWN MAN riding the SKATEBOARD, I KNOW that YOU KNOW that is WRONG". (First place was the pony)
