Had a good conversation with Calgary’s new Mayor @jeromyyyc.bsky.social yesterday about working together to build more homes, safer streets, and stronger communities — creating more prosperity and security for Calgarians and all Canadians.

One of the things I’ve always found fascinating about political communications is that politicians and the people around them are usually so far up their own asses that it seems like they’ve never interacted with a regular person.
It’s nice to have had the opportunity to do it differently.

More Calgary mayoral candidates, including a former councillor and runner-up in the 2021 mayoral election, have officially kicked off their campaigns on Tuesday.
Jeromy Farkas is now the fifth applicant vying for the city’s top job listed on its website.
Speaking to reporters at the Elections Calgary office on 22 Street NE, he says he is running as an independent, reiterating a platform of safety and affordability.
“What we’ve been hearing, first and foremost, has been around safety. It’s around affordability, and we’re ready to get started and to engage in this campaign and provide the solutions to these challenges,” he said.
“We have about two months to go. It’s going to be an exciting campaign.”
Farkas was the councillor for Ward 11 from 2017 to 2021 and also served as a police commissioner and community volunteer. Since October 2023, he’s served as the chief executive officer for the Glenbow Ranch Park Foundation
It's official! Thanks to my all-star team for dotting all the i's and crossing all the t's and my neighbours who signed the nomination papers.
Let's go!

Policy Brief
Stronger Together
A vision to empower Calgary’s community leaders
If you want to know what makes a city work, look to the nonprofit leaders solving problems before City Hall even notices them. I saw it growing up, and I’ve spent my career working to support it.
From Dover to downtown and everywhere in between, strong communities don’t happen by accident. They’re built by volunteers, nonprofit workers, and neighbours who care.
That’s where I come from—and that’s who I’ll fight for as mayor.
Champion per-capita operating grants and multi-year funding.
Coordinate shared spaces, tools, and piggybacking on City purchasing prices.
Enable tax receipts for Community Associations
Renew and extend Enough for All, Calgary’s 10-year poverty reduction strategy led by Vibrant Communities Calgary (VCC)
Appoint City Council and Administration liaisons for the volunteer sector and establish partnership with the Nonprofit Chamber
Visit the complete Policy Brief for my 10 commitments to lift up Calgary’s community leaders, so we are all Stronger Together.

Growing up in Dover, I saw how volunteers keep Calgary strong—coaching kids, helping seniors, fighting poverty, and building community. This is my plan as mayor to make Calgary the most supportive city for volunteers in Canada. Read more: platform.jeromy.ca/policy-brief... #yyccc

I have a lot of thoughts about this. For one, I’m not sure that returning local news to Meta platforms will fix the information crisis. Folks have continued their usage of FB as if the news was never there to begin with. I also hate the idea of letting Meta feel like they won and have power over us.

Bell: Calgary mayor's race heats up — Jeromy Farkas gets it from left and right
Jeromy Farkas, running to be Calgary's mayor and the early favourite, gets shots from the left and the right as the election battle heats up
They see our momentum, all-star team, and signs going up across the city.
Instead of sharing their own ideas, they’re focused on tearing me down.
But this election isn’t about me—it’s about all of us. Let’s build a city that reflects our hopes, not our fears.

Hey so even if you're on the left, turning to disinformation to try to push forth objectives is not a mean that will be justified by the end and it's going to destroy the opportunities to actually move things forward beyond the current hellscape we're living in. I am disappointmentmanda.

When too many politicians are blowing dog whistles about newcomers, we need folks like @jeromyyyc.bsky.social who give full-throated support for an inclusive and welcoming city. And then back that up with a platform that benefits all of us.

This!! People discount young voters (even after panicking over losing them as a demo), and by doing so, neglect to campaign to them properly. Zohran reached them where they were at, and his popularity was so noticeable online.

Restoring Certainty
A targeted vision for housing in Calgary
JEROMIY
FARKAS
Restoring Certainty for Renters
Nearly four in ten Calgarians rent their homes-including tens of thousands of families. But too many are facing rising rents, surprise evictions, and a lack of stability. For a single parent already juggling work and childcare, an unexpected rent hike can be devastating. For children, especially those with housing insecurity, frequent moves can mean disrupted schooling and emotional stress.
Renters are even more vulnerable when rents rise faster than wages, and vacancies are few and far between. Many are one rent increase or lease expiry away from being forced out of their communities- or the city entirely.
As mayor, I will work to protect renters and ensure that we all have a path to stable and affordable housing:
6. Launch a Calgary Renters' Support Office to provide legal information, mediation, and support.
7. Advocate to the province for improved rental protections, including clear rules around 'renovictions' and reasonable notice standards, and advocacy for the expansion of rent-geared-to-income housing, where rent is based on a tenant's ability to pay.
8.
9.1
Support the creation of a Non-Market Housing Acquisition Fund to preserve at-risk rental buildings.
Champion a Housing First strategy prioritizing permanent housing with wraparound supports.
10. Establish a Renters' Advisory Council ensuring that tenant voices help shape municipal housing policy, for example, to begin exploration of a Maximum Heat Bylaw.
Renter protections, including max heat bylaws, are something I’m very proud that our team included in this housing policy: www.jeromy.ca/news-1/polic...

Community surveys are a huge part of understanding where candidates stand on the issues that matter to us and what they prioritize (or have given even any thought to). The responses to Creative Calgary’s will be interesting to watch for all of us who love the arts www.creativecalgary.org/mayor

A dark blue campaign graphic titled “Policy Brief” with a subtitle:
Built for Belonging – “A vision for a safer Calgary” (with "safer" underlined in blue).
Below, the text reads:
"When we invest early—in mental health, housing, mentorship, and prevention—we not only reduce crime, we build opportunities, we keep families together, and we strengthen Calgary at its roots" (bolded and underlined in red).
Jeromy continues:
"As mayor, this is my vision for a safer Calgary—from Dover to downtown, from playgrounds to train platforms" (highlighted in yellow and blue).
The page ends with the multicolour campaign website: OURPATHFORWARD.CA.
As Calgary prepares to welcome up to a million new residents, we must choose: keep reacting to crime—or lead with action that prevents it.
I’m releasing Built for Belonging, a 25-point plan for a safer Calgary.

I originally started helping on the campaign mostly to help my friend Daorcey because he believed in Jeromy. But I quickly realized that I did too. I don’t trust a lot of things in this world, but I always leave myself open to changing my mind, because that’s the only way we can move forward.

1/ Edworthy Park is one of Calgary’s treasures—a place for river walks, bike rides, and family picnics.
It’s what public space is supposed to be: connection, community, and access for everyone.
Now the City wants to introduce paid parking. 🧵 #yyccc #yycbike
