It didn't get particularly cold here in Chickaloon (-22F for one night), it just seemed that the -5ish went on and one and on. Was it a particularly long period of cold relative to history in some areas? [and I'm not even getting into the WIND concurrent with below zero's]

5F and guessing 40-45 mph gusts in Chickaloon. Reportedly 60 mph on a ridge behind town. Glad I have thick ropes over my yurt, anchored to trees.

Hmm. Yet I only used the snowblower (in Chickaloon) once. Maybe it was deeper higher in the mountains.

All I know is that this is the first winter since I began year-round stream monitoring in 2020 that I did not have to wear snowshoes to access any of my 19 sites in any month. This is between Glacier View and Lazy Mountain (Palmer). What was the % normal snowfall for Sutton and Chickaloon?

E.P.A. Plans to Shut Down the Energy Star Program
And the point is??
EPA's Energy Star, a program that costs $32m but delivered $40b, in annual savings is to be canceled. Despite a "range of industries including heating, lighting, home appliances and food-equipment manufacturers" wanting to keep it.

This is terrible news for coastal communities in Alaska and for Tribes that are implementing culvert replacement, floodplain restoration, riparian planting, and other actions to restore salmon habitat.

At the moment, the most Canadian thing I own is four custom-built windows -- built in Canada by Loewen with Canadian douglas fir and sold at a glass shop in Whitehorse -- that I picked up on Tuesday. Worth about $10,000 Cdn. They will grace the south wall of my Alaska cabin.

The Dire Wolf
Its representation has been introduced to the world, now what?
Genetic engineering meets Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara culture -- and that may be a good thing.

of course, there's this: "However, a potential hitch has surfaced: As the Trump administration cuts federal spending, a grant program that helps states and tribes pay for wildlife crossings in collision hot spots is now in doubt, including grants that had already been promised."

We need these in Alaska. Alaska Dept of Fish & Game solution is hunting out all the moose on the Glenn Hwy corridor. We can do better.

Cash-strapped states panic over end of Obamacare subsidies
The looming possibility of slashing Medicaid spending and not extending ACA subsidies has prompted a legislative scramble from Sacramento to Annapolis.
I am hearing a lot of recycled news on NPR, but I am hearing NOTHING about the end of "tax credits" on Obamacare health insurance. Which is the only thing that makes Alaska's insanely high premiums affordable.

When this behaviour is mimicked by cutting the leaves they only flower 5 days earlier!

Opinion | How Trump Will Fail (Gift Article)
The problem with populism is that it doesn’t work.
People feel pain from tremendous wealth inequality and the shrinking ability to retire in some comfort and dignity. Intensifying inequality and further shrinking safety nets should, gods willing, be their downfall.

Hope is a Verb.
Every August for the past 20 years, Johannes Fritz has taught endangered Northern Bald Ibises the safest way to migrate across Europe, using a microlight aircraft. A stubborn hope that’s every bit as human as the tendency to destroy.
