I think about how City Museum in St. Louis has cornices and other architectural features from demolished Chicago buildings. You can demo without destroying everything. As an Art Deco lover, this breaks my heart.

I am not a churchgoer but I am a Bible reader. And that puts me squarely in the midst of a grand American faith tradition. I have read the words of Jesus. He wouldn't be okay with what we as a nation are doing in the name of Christianity.

There are many Christians out there today who think they are saved but who Jesus wouldn't give the time of day to.

If citations are needed, I was an executive assistant and then effective project manager at the American Bible Society headquarters. When I left for law school, I was asked to stay. I know my Christian Bible.

Many many years ago, I questioned my dad when he self-described as an atheist follower of Jesus. He told me that if people actually did what Jesus preached, we'd be a much better world. To follow his teachings is to care for our fellow man, to stand up for those oppressed, to fight for the voiceless

But right now I struggle to see how any of what is happening reflects the teachings of Jesus.

Where does it say to drag children naked from their beds and handcuff them like has happened in Chicago in this past week? I have been told that if you're not Christian, you lack the morals to be just and fair.

Our government pretends to be a Christian government. Setting aside the big issue of the founding of this nation being based not on a single faith but on the idea of faith as separated from our government, where in the Bible does it say to hate others who are in need?

This picture hit me because my mother in law is an Anglican minister who I have seen in a collar many times, and because I know that the Christian faith does not tell us to do what our government is doing.

I am so sad to have simultaneously learned about these incredible Kris Kringle outfits and also that they have been replaced with more boring robes.

Cats are such a gift. Living with little wild creatures that self domesticated but only on their own terms is such an amazingly ancient human tradition.

My newest tattoo. Added to my recent Bartók tattoo is Ditta Pásztory, his wife. My piano teacher when I lived in Japan as a teen was Erzsébet Tusa, who performed a lot of Bartók with his widow, Ditta. Erzsébetnéni was an incredible interpreter of Bartók so my connection to Bartók is through Ditta.

I got a new set of dishes for the first time in my life. I feel like my cooking has instantly leveled up. Easy weeknight supper with adjika and yogurt-roasted chicken, stir fried long beans with basil, roasted tiny eggplants with a tahini lemon yogurt dressing, and freekeh. Local veg and chicken.

While the story of Ben Franklin wanting the turkey to be the national bird of the United States is apocryphal, my hot take is that if that had been our national bird, we'd be a fundamentally different nation.
