When earning my MFA in Dramatic Writing, I never imagined that would lead to embracing a sustainable desert lifestyle. Inspired by a group of rainwater harvesting enthusiasts, Dan and I dug basins and shared that passion: www.sustainablelivingtucson.com

In the heart of Tucson, the Tucson Botanical Gardens is more than a garden, it is a living tapestry woven from the dreams of Bernice Porter, whose vision gave rise to a place where nature, art, science, and culture intertwine. Stories of heritage, and pathways invite discovery at every turn.

02.05.2025 02:27 โ ๐ 45660 ๐ 12513 ๐ฌ 1049 ๐ 679A flyer at the register of an on-campus market at Cal Poly SLO explains how SNAP benefits can and can't be used at the store. Annoyingly, it can't be used for hot food.
Reminder: another group of people who may rely on SNAP is students. If you live in a college town and/or feel connected to your alma mater, please consider calling up the campus food bank and asking what they need - money, types of food etc.
The paternalism of this flyer is painful when you see it.

When we got home from our outing to Tombstone, we didn't have time to go to the store to get a veggie for dinner. Then I remembered that I had some growing in my front yard. Late season purslane saved dinner - and breakfast the next morning!

Flowering Desert Plants - from Arizona State Parks

With all this rain we are getting a lot of so-called weeds. A weed is a volunteer plant that we don't want in our yard. The good weeds include edible weeds, wild flowers & native grasses. The bad weeds include buffelgrass and sticker weeds like goat heads and tumbleweeds. See how to identify them.

For days we have gotten flood alerts from Hurricane Priscilla.
Everyone kept saying, "What rain?"
Today our jujube basin filled with rainwater from the downspout and our overflow cisterns are all full too.
Proud to say, "This home harvests the the rain?
As cities expand, migratory birds face growing threats such as habitat loss, collisions with glass buildings, pollution, and light disturbance. But urban spaces can also become sanctuaries when planned with nature in mind.
Plant native vegetation and restore natural habitats.
There used to be over 100 varieties of birds in our neighborhood. Dan and I count 26 in our yard now.
World Migratory Bird Day: this yearโs theme โShared Spaces: Creating Bird-Friendly Cities and Communitiesโ highlights the need to rethink how we design and live in our urban environments.

12.10.2025 04:56 โ ๐ 3 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0As the dark clouds of Hurricane Priscilla loom overhead with the promise (or threat) of rain, it may seem unintuitive to deep water plants. After all, won't they get watered by the storm? But one inch of rain can fill up even our biggest cistern. So it's time to make room for more rainwater.
