It's shocking how quickly you can gain weight when you aren't burning 1000 to 2000 calories a day cycling.

Well there's a bigger chance of me being a drunk pedestrian if I meet you than being a swimmer, that's for sure.

But the mandatory life vest law doesn't cover all those, is what I mean.

Is your drowning statistic only about people in boats? I assumed it included people swimming from the shore, who have no such law. Are you trying to lie with statistics? 😜

There IS very good scientific backing that you should never get into a car while even slightly inebriated, even as a passenger. I'm sure no one who does that would ever complain about cyclists without helmets though.

As you like, I'm never trying to convince someone to not wear one. But I also don't force my safety opinions on other people without very good scientific backing, if you know what I mean.

That's the root of the helmet debate. Most people know that walking around isn't super dangerous. But for whatever reason, people think that cycling around IS super dangerous. It's pure propaganda. We are all really bad at assessing risk. Otherwise the gambling industry wouldn't exist.

Without the number of kms cycled in Norway in 2025 and the number of kms walked in Norway in 2025, we can't draw any conclusions from this. But as I said before - even what we could conclude wouldn't be very certain because probably more people have died fishing or watching tv.

I understand, I spent most of my career doing data science and researching/presenting statistics. I will admit to often being sloppy when presenting statistics without being paid. 😂 But I've done my best to capture the balance of many studies on this subject; you just can't present that in a meme.

This is all I want from AI, and I'm willing to pay for it:

What I can tell you is that this study is UK based. And that in the Netherlands elderly cyclists have excess mortality, which leads to the conclusion that elderly drivers everywhere else are killing younger people when they die driving a car.

1) very few things are recorded, because it's generally assumed the cyclist is at fault and nothing else matters
2) cycling is so safe that it's hard to draw statistical conclusions for the amount of data that we as a society have

That's the entirety of the argument for me, I just want to ride on cycling and shared use infrastructure without motor vehicles present. But I'm frequently told a motor vehicle on a cycle path is one less car on the road, so it's a good thing.
