Lastly I checked out Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon and wow, why have I never played this?! This is great!

I'm saving my game now and I will have to play this more. I still haven't even overclocked the Analogue 3D so I'll have to play with that later!

What other games should I try?

Due to a stressful week, I missed this anniversary. Looking at my timeline, I don’t think anyone really has fond memories of the game, which is not unexpected.

Still, there is something here that hints at an intriguing unexplored path for Goemon. Maybe an interesting rogue-lite/dungeon crawler.

I just need to make myself have that chance. That is my goal for 2026. Just write, before AI comes in and distorts the history of the series permanently. I’m really sorry that the project has stalled, but I will do my best to continue.

Just throw me some koban coins my way, Goemon.

And that is really frustrating, because the more I play Goemon games, the more I think about them, the better my understanding of the series and everything else behind it has become. I just need to write about it.

I have been on hiatus for about 3 years or so. I always promise myself I will come back, but once again changes in my life threaten to make my history path even more difficult. I will need to trade even more time to survive.

For a long time, I’ve had the description “On Hiatus” on my profile. I’ve wanted to be more active with my research, but the harsh reality of researching game history while also working one or two more jobs made it untenable to continue writing long essays about the Goemon series.

You’re wrong. (😉) But this demands a tier list.

I realized right now that this sounds like my villain origin story.

2003 - Passed L2 after studying Japanese for 4 years (1 of them in Japan)
2007 - 2012 - Took the N1 test every year and failed
2015 - Started doing translation.
2018 - Translated two books. Passed N1.

I’ll write my thoughts a bit later, but that is what hurt Bakeru. It starts off too slow and in general should’ve been a leaner experience. The demo is based on the early stages, which doesn’t show it in the best light. They tried to target young children, too, which is very difficult to balance.

Very interesting location for the game on your shelf: Bakeru has a lot in common with games such as Tropical Freeze, Splatoon, Sonic Mania, Super Monkey Ball, etc., but there was something about Bakeru that somehow didn’t appeal to a wide audience.

Part of the reason why Bakeru failed to make a splash is probably why a lot of people might be interested in playing the game now: it’s a bouncy platform adventure with colorful graphics and great design. It’s not Goemon, but its own thing.

While I imagine that Good-Feel is disappointed with how everything turned out, it’s heart-warming to see just how much they have supported the tanuki. Bakeru has become their de-facto mascot and has spurred the company to try a lot of things, like merchandising.

Maybe I exaggerated when I wrote that people disliked it, but commentary about Goemon 2 was not as positive as it was for Karakuri Dochu. Given how much it is featured in Famicom retrospectives and histories, though, I get the sense that a lot more people have fond memories of the first game.

Re-release this: Ganbare Goemon 3: Shishi Jūrokubē's Mechanical Manji Hold The third Mystical Ninja game on the Super Famicom goes in a different direction. Again.

Goemon is back, and he has to go to the future to save the Old Man, who invented a time machine to help him pick up women and instead ended up kidnapped by a French nun who forced him to build a robot army so she could conquer the past. Anyway this one is an action-adventure game.

That’s exactly how I felt when I played Goemon 2, too. IT took the series in an interesting direction, but there were people who didn’t like the tone and felt alienated. This reminds me of the discourse surrounding BOTW, with a lot of people saying it was like the true successor of the original LoZ.

Goemon 2 is also one of my favorite games in the series. However, one interesting discovery in this project was that a lot of people in 1989 did not think it was better. The game itself was technically an improvement on the whole, but many people missed the simple loop mechanics of the first game,

Huge overall improvement over the 1st, graphics and sound are incredible.

I love how there's a Konami Shop where you can buy sets that change some enemy sprites into other Konami characters.

This is peak #Konami, no doubt.
