Like other franchises, Bomberman suffered as Konami shifted focus around 2005/06, but part of me wonders if Bomberman was a generational phemonemon. It shined as a local multiplayer game, but maybe younger generations prefer different games which are designed for online, streaming, and esports.

As far as I am aware, both the Switch and the PS5 versions are not region locked, but you’ll need to get a Japanese account or to buy the physical version. The Steam version seems to be region-locked, however.

The collection has been rated “A” (=OK for everyone), which is a little surprising, as Gaiden 2 had been rated “B” (for players 12 and up) due to references to sex and gambling when it was ported to Viritual Console. Many argued it was an over-exaggeration, however.

- Rewind
- Quick Save/Quick Load (especially useful for the first two games.)
- Turbo (=fast-forward)
- Rapid-fire (Presented here as being useful for those games which you couldn’t complete back in the day. Essential for Kurofune.)

I really should have checked before writing that post. 😅

Still… For how long, I wonder.

That’s true: none of them were made by Nintendo, but Doraemon was originally released on the Famicom and Ninja Gaiden II on the Famicom and NES. At the very least I would have expected the Ninja Gaiden games on NSO.

That’s a good point; in many ways, it’s a good sign as any that platform holders have given up on the idea of being general curators of the retro titles released on their platforms. And maybe that’s for the best.
