Am really reallt not trying to toot my own here because am feeling, theoretically and academically, speechless, but if there has ever been any moment to take the thought of gulf thinkers and scholars seriously , now is the moment.
Marx’s “scientific” critique of utopian socialists was immanent: they are too realistic to see proletarian revolution as a real possibility, so they appeal to the good will of the bourgeoisie to create intentional communities “beyond” the class struggle they reproduce. They betray utopia.
For Marx this made the utopian socialists tragic figures in a way. Maybe they were just too early to have to reckon with the threat of a rev proletariat—presupposition of the materialist theory of history as class struggle, the theory which alone could give context & direction to utopian desire.
