The German Philosophy that Emancipated America KELLY M.S. SWOPE | Lives like his were proof that the German philosophy of freedom planted real roots in American institutions before and after the War over Slavery.

Excited about this review by Kelly Swope I edited for Marginalia. He looks at two books: Matthew Stewart's An Emancipation of the Mind and @andrewhartman.bsky.social Marx in America - using Du Bouis's bio of John Brown as a way in. Brilliant writing. www.marginaliareviewofbooks.com/post/the-ger...

invited to a march madness class at a tavern where I guess people talk about how to read stats & records, make predictions by combining quantitative & qualitative factors, etc. Gotta say it seems pretty unscientific in light of what we now know to be the only reliable method: octopus divination

This was *the* case pro-Israel defenders would point at to say "See? Israel takes human rights violations seriously!"

And after all that — including mobs of Israeli rioters and politicians storming a military base to protest the arrest of these soldiers — it's being dropped.

This recent article by Katie Brennan uses my translations of Clara Zetkin's work on socialism. Really happy that my work can make Zetkin's ideas more accessible: www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

imo everyone should read the essay from Salvage in the tweet below and also read this longer essay about opposition to war: www.academia.edu/64028197/Int...

I totally understand the impulse to point to elite illegality but Rob lays out why that isn't as effective as it feels like it is/should be.

Marx’s “scientific” critique of utopian socialists was immanent: they are too realistic to see proletarian revolution as a real possibility, so they appeal to the good will of the bourgeoisie to create intentional communities “beyond” the class struggle they reproduce. They betray utopia.

For Marx this made the utopian socialists tragic figures in a way. Maybe they were just too early to have to reckon with the threat of a rev proletariat—presupposition of the materialist theory of history as class struggle, the theory which alone could give context & direction to utopian desire.
