As end-of-empire scenarios go it is so much more dignified to get your capital city sacked by the Visigoths than to have a bunch of illiterate rich people in their 70s doing it through a series of incomprehensible tantrums because their brains were defeated by their phones.

How hazard ratios can mislead and why it matters in practice - European Journal of Epidemiology Hazard ratios are routinely reported as effect measures in clinical trials and observational studies. However, many methodological works have raised concerns about the interpretation of hazard ratios ...

A nice recent article on why you should abandon hazard ratios.

BRIAN Wilson tells the story of how Don Henley once came backstage after a concert. The Eagles co-founder arrived clutching his copy of Pet Sounds, the Beach Boys' classic 1966 album, and told Wilson how much their music had inspired him when he was younger.
Keen to have Wilson autograph the album, he watched as Wilson picked up a Sharpie and wrote: "To Don - thanks for all the great songs." Henley turned to leave but Wilson called him back and, grabbing the record, crossed out "great" and replaced it with "good"

Our results thus add to a small set of studies linking maternal sociality with offspring survival, here in the dispersing sex. As in humans, more socially connected female chimpanzees have higher offspring survival, despite primarily residing with non-kin.

Plot showing positive association between female social integration and likelihood of offspring survival to age 1. Curve and yellow confidence band show predicted probability and 95% confidence interval of offspring survival vs. maternal CSI-F for the 70 offspring born to females without female kin in the community at birth. Points and top density plot show the empirical distribution of maternal CSI-F for those offspring that survived to age 1, while triangles and bottom density plot indicate the empirical distribution of maternal CSI-F for those offspring that died before age 1. The vertical line in each distribution shows the median maternal CSI-F value for offspring that survived and those that died, respectively.

In the above plot you'll notice that females w/ close female kin in the community tended to be more socially integrated. Gombe females often stay in their birth community. Is kinship driving the relationship we report? NO! If you exclude females with close kin from the sample, results are unchanged

plot showing empirical values of maternal social integration (CSI-F) vs kin presence and offspring survival (panel A) and maternal age (panel B). Panel A shows two violin plots, with the median CSI-F value higher for mothers of surviving offspring than for offspring that died before age 1. Panel B shows that the youngest and oldest females in the sample have higher CSI-F values, and also tend to have close female maternal kin present in the community.

Triangles indicate offspring that died before age 1, and the blue line in B) is a loess curve drawn through the data. Points in A) are shown with jitter (in the x direction only) to better show their distributions.

So we need more work on maternal sociality & offspring survival! And we have some for you: we found that female chimpanzees that were more socially integrated with other females in the year before giving birth had higher offspring survival to age 1 (pd. of highest mortality) and to age 5 (weaning)

Lots of great research on sociality and fitness in humans & other mammals in recent decades, but evidence for a connection between maternal sociality & *offspring survival* is more mixed and taxonomically limited than that for a connection between sociality & other components of female fitness
