Reading a bio of Claude Shannon and it crystallized a sense I have of how engineering culture has changed into tech culture. Shannon embodies a certain ethos that used to be everywhere, where the goal was to do really smart stuff, and spend your spare time on unicycles and flamethrowing trumpets.

There would be some deep irony in them having to pay the RBS levy to overbuild the FWA footprint with fibre, to fund the NBN FWA network they're making redundant in the areas they'd target.

My partner grew up in "the valley" after the power stations got privatized and the area has had a tough run, with lots of industries closing. I'm sure the investment will be welcomed, but with NBNco already offering Gigabit (+ investigating faster PON) what's Britt bringing they don't already have?
