We used to have some societal norms against this stuff, and they were getting stronger. Then the editors and investors decided that *actually* the cultural crisis is white men feeling any doubt about themselves whatsoever.

When I was little, the U.S. military came to our home at gunpoint and took me and my family away. We were imprisoned for years in barbed wire camps simply because we were Japanese American. I have spent my life telling that story, hoping it would never be repeated.

fwiw, I saw only "I, Borg" in a college TV class in the late 90s & it single-handedly made me realize I'd been utterly wrong thinking Star Wars was better than Star Trek.

(But I'll also admit it wasn't until watching DS 9 that I really got into the whole franchiseβ€”and I'm thankful I finally did!)

This map is from a 1931 issue of Fortune Magazine & tracks the production and transport of wine, beer, cider, and various hard liquors in the U.S. at the end of Prohibition. This is why the Midwest is the β€œbeer belt,” but also: damn, look at that wicked hard Apple Jack ring up in Maine.

Imagining what underlying changes would be required before all of us socio-economically-centered Americans could begin to have productive conversations about differentiated education's blend of benefits, harms, & possibilities.

(And imagining the same for other types of public goods, of course.)

Ooooooh, I think I get it now?

What are the chances that the backstory of writing that amazing musical episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds basically started off with "okay, so it's always 'space opera', but how come it's never 'space musical'β€½β€½!"?

One reason our sclerotic elites are failing at confronting fascism is because rationalism, incrementalism and proceduralism are completely insufficient weapons to confront an irrational actor that exploits the latter two to in order to do away with all three.

It is likely easy for the average person to eye-roll about professors complaining about students generating essays with bots, but the process of formulating an argument, a story, or a eulogy changes the writer, and, in its reading, can change readers as well.

I actually think it’s a good thing that there are people who devote their working lives to studying something that may only be of interest to a small number of people, who get on here with great excitement and say β€œI nerded the heck out of this for three years, I’m proud of me, read my article!”

One thing the leftist incel discourse has highlighted very well is that the problem is not "young men can't get laid"; the problem is the combination of misogyny and systemic disenfranchisement which weaponizes misogyny against both men and women.

If you really want to keep the alliteration, just off the top of my head you can opt instead for:

- "Alligator Auschwitz"
- "Mosquito Manzanar"

Subverting authoritarian uses of language isn't difficult, and it's very much worth doing.

there are a lot of things we all could improve on but at the top of the list when posting or talking about politics is the need to frame things on our terms, and to avoid solidifying fascism by mindlessly using their terms

Weeks later, I am still very proud of how well I kept my composure when my 13 year old nibling (politely, inclusively) asked in earnest whether I knew what dubstep was.

(I also have yet to send along listening recommendations, although they will eventually happen.)

Does "minimum security" more strongly imply "ease of inmates escaping" or "danger to high-profile inmates"?

Asking for an extremely high-profile inmate whom many well-connected people overly familiar with skirting legal & moral bounds would love to ensure could no longer testify against them.
