And I’m grateful to @flissina.bsky.social for listening to my concerns about one piece, and pointing me to the Howells book where a mention in a footnote led me to finding a second looted piece. And locating both!
30.04.2025 00:33 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0I’ve found two more Late Antique gold glass bases stolen by the Nazis from Poland, so I reported them to @kultura_gov_pl (& the one in the US to @DHSgov).
We’d assumed the Czartoryski collection glass was destroyed in 1944, but it’s slowly surfacing … and hopefully they’ll return to Poland! 🇵🇱
Well, enjoy Pisa.
If you need a basic pensione, the Gialel has this amazing capital built into the facade.
Trattoria da Stelio is good and good priced.
I stayed in a pensione for a conference with a similar view. Beware the mosquitoes 🦟 in summer, it’s too close to the Arno.

working on Sardis acropolis stuff today -- building a list and commentary on "missing buildings" known only from inscriptions.. have about 60 so far (!).
there's a famous list of fountains, itself lost, taken to Smyrna 1874-8 by King of Brazil. anyone know Brazil's collections? a curious history..
The irony is that although I had to change my first topic - on Hecamonmid and Macedonian 4th c BC royal patronage … between the Hecatomnus Tomb and Amphipolis, I probably contributed more to that field 🤷♀️.
26.11.2024 03:41 — 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0And we’d get paid to write articles and reviews for popular archeological magazines, to teach a postgrad class, lots of little things to add income - now most of those are not around any more. Hence the appeal of funded (no choice) PhDs, that suit museums or established research projects.
26.11.2024 03:37 — 👍 3 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Also, funding has changed in UK, now universities charge. I had my fees paid and a stipend for living on, won a scholarship. Because of the expansion of university education, that doesn’t happen anymore - a First led to automatic funding of postgrad in those days. Not any more. Now it’s loans! 🤷♀️
26.11.2024 03:31 — 👍 3 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0I think funding has changed things. In UK 1994 I chose my topic, my professor changed it a bit to suit his needs. Now people apply for funded PhD on topics that are part of funded research projects a lot more - so obviously there’s less choice with those. It’s economically sensible for them to.

23.11.2024 13:22 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0I did quite a lot of research on that collection, partly because some come from an older one that dealer acquired! Most of the Getty corrections come from me - like the bearded Octavian not being ex Piombino. It was a lot of dodgy marketing by sellers 🤷♀️
