The accurate conclusion would be “so if I lived in one of these states, I’d be living among people who were financially successful during their careers.” 6/

Ever wonder what “correlation is not causation” means? This is a good example of that, too. Someone might look at such a title and think “so if I lived in one of these states, I’d get a higher COLA”, i.e., living in that state would result in (cause) an increase in their COLA. 5/

The article is dumb, but benign. But be aware of uses of statistics that are meant to deceive.

Average and percentage are two ways of looking at data. Lying with statistics is using a real measure in a deceptive (or, IMO, stupid) way. A top 10 list of state COLA amounts is a real, but meaningless, list. But you can’t write an article about states with top 10 COLA percentages. 3/

If you take the average dollar amount of everyone’s COLA in states, you will find differences. But everyone receives the same COLA percentage - so where one lives has absolutely no impact on the amount they receive. The article makes that clear, the title is clickbait. 2/
