I wanted to offer some thoughts on the Gates climate memo that has been circulating this week. While I can't directly speak for others, I can say that my own response is one of dismay & deep frustration (and that this view is shared by many climate/Earth scientists). [1/n]

Today, someone who has been surfing the AI hype wave to boost his career, got upset by our position paper.

He gave no substantive couinterargument. Just called it “activism”. As if that is an insult.

In a world where techno-fascism hollows out our institutions, I’m a proud scientific activist.

If Bill Gates is right about Climate Change mitigation being “pointless” (he’s obviously not, since mitigation is only complicated because it’s made to be, and will literally determine what we arrogantly assume we’re able to “adapt” to), it’s in large part because of billionaires like Bill Gates.

The most insanely frustrating thing about the #ClimateCrisis is how the breakthrough we so clearly need isn’t technological. It’s just a collective willingness, a determination even, to change in ways that would clearly be SO MUCH BETTER than the clear and obvious consequences of NOT changing.
