Well, they just kept saying "them" - "hit them hard," "take out their capabilities," etc. It wasn't clear to me whether they had decided it was a particular country or had decided (against all logic, evidence, and common sense) that China, Russia, and North Korea constituted a unified threat.

Co-sign all of this

I guess? But why would "the book" have that as a pre-planned strike option? The strategic rationale is completely incoherent.

Unless you think it's remotely realistic that Russia, China, & N. Korea would all join forces to launch an incredibly risky nuclear attack--which, by the way, they certainly couldn't count on the US being unable to identify the source of, as happens in the movie.

29.10.2025 07:54 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Yes, this is it exactly - the whole "dilemma" is built on a Cold War premise where nuclear war is essentially a binary contest. There *was* a certain grim logic to M.A.D., but that game theory's out the window in the movie's scenario.

How did telling people about Platner's tattoo give Mills an 18-point bounce when he only dropped 7?

True, it's actually a pretty smart pick. You know, if you're evil.

No, see, he decided to make the decision "on timing* exactly a month ago. And this is the timing he decided on. Then. A month ago. Very decisive!

I for one think the Epstein Ballroom will be magnificent. I love the decor theme of β€œwhat if Uday Hussein ran a Ramada Inn.” And giving it a theme song everyone will associate with it is a stroke of brilliance! β€œThank Heaven for Little Girls” is very catchy.

Well, it's not the mainstream D machine that's been boosting Planter so far - if it had been, I don't think Mills would've gotten in.

It is striking in that movie how much he and Pacino seem maybe 10 years apart instead of 25.

Yeah, interesting. I think you could make a case that that was a period of unusual ferment in genre fiction, especially SF & horror. Not necessarily any casual link there, of course.
