30.07.2025 08:24 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I talked to a NOAA colleague yesterday who told me that 75% of the federal employees of his division have left and heβs worried about their ability to get work done even if Congress funds NOAA at some level. The devastation to science will be felt for generations.

34.7Β°C in London today. Thatβs not just rare -- it is excessive heat amplified by climate change.
Climate Shift Index shows this level of heat is now at least THREE TIMES MORE LIKELY due to man-made heat-trapping pollution.
This is summer for the UK in a warming world.
Comparing temperature anomalies in summer 1976 and summer 2024
As we seem to, yet again, be talking about the hot UK summer of 1976, a reminder that the UK is not the world.
Yes, it was hot that summer over our small region, but the bigger picture tells a different story.
And, we've had hotter UK summers since.

What an incredible part of the country!

With global warming, there is no new normal, only ever-accelerating change until we stop increasing CO2.

Image of a pot of fondue. There was bread, pickles, potatoes (not shown) and pear (hidden behind a candle) to dip in!
View from my hotel room in Karlsruhe, overlooking train tracks, with two trains visible.
"Catch box" microphone that is soft so can be thrown across the room.
I'm back from the 10th European Windstorms workshop in Bern, a few (non-academic) things I learnt:
1. Pear is really nice to dip in fondue.
2. Travelling by train in Europe is amazing, especially using Interrail!
3. If I can throw the microphone I am much more likely to ask a question...
Was great to attend the @rmets.org Insurance Special interest group's event "Advancing Collaboration between the Insurance Sector and Academia" yesterday.
Lots of great conversation which will hopefully lead to collaboration in the future!

Just when I thought I was on the wrong side of the train, I was lucky enough to see some of the picturesque snowy Lake District on my train to Glasgow!

On 10th Jan I will be presenting work on wind-precipitation correlation from European cyclones at the @rmets.org "Postgraduate Student Showcase", starting at 6pm.
It's a hybrid event, held in Edinburgh and via Zoom. Just register using the link below:

Bivariate colour maps, with a UK climate example.
Even on the scale of the UK we have different climate zones, from relatively cold & wet, to warm & dry.
