Ah, Bayesian statistics. Last time we met was what, 20 years ago?
Why the hell can I remember stats from 20 years ago and cannot get Python syntax right having used it in at least one course per semester for the last 22 months?
Uh-oh, between having made SOME progress on SOME real stuff today, and now following the Jays game one-level-removed, it seems the #ADHD brain is in full-on #fuckItFriday mode again.
There's a reason for my pinned post!

Text: Police are also proposing a dedicated traffic services unit of six officers dedicated solely to traffic enforcement across the region, as, Crowell said, the region averages 15 traffic fatalities a year. The dedicated unit would be $1.24 million of the budget.
For those who say that police should be the ones responsible for catching speeders on our roads, not speed cameras: In addition to that being far less efficient and effective, it comes with a very big price tag. www.therecord.com/news/waterlo...

Basically a 2FA that self-destructs the connection between your anonymous account and public identity as soon as it is used
1) access my secure and immutable entitlements as a citizen of my jurisdiction
2) validate my public identity(ies) in a secure way to prove who I am as needed. Say for banking, sub-national services, employment.
3) create anonymized/dereferenced public identities including online ones that ONLY β¦
What we really need is a public, personally or as-a-human-right-by-government ID service that is private, anonymized, but tied to my citizen entitlements. Absolutely encrypted and the key dies with me or with my country of origin.
FROM THAT I may do 3 things.
Being forever tied to an identity *you do not fully own* is a problem. If I am johanna@mastodon1 and johannabee@mastodon2 but I move and have to open johannab33e@newfedsocial, but also johanna45@bsky.org β¦ itβs a mess to connect and someone else might be any of those usernames @server16.blah

But like most of these digital so-called βplacesβ, that remains ephemeral, and vulnerable.
No. There is no inherently better/inherently sucks, there are two different frameworks that offer many different components each.
If someone suspends you on Mastodon, as things are now, you lose connectivity, data, AND identity.
Most of us have a backup profile and export things often.
Thank you for taking the time not only to address this, and not only to explain what is going on, but to explain to *everyone* in terms they can access how this is really working. Many of us donβt even know what we need to know about it and your efforts are enlightening.
08.10.2025 00:14 β π 9 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Suspension of accts from Bluesky has called into question the mission and very existence of Blacksky. "If bsky can still suspend you, what's the point?"
For one usually Bluesky doesn't just suspend you. They delete all of your data AND suspend you. Moving to Blacksky prevents that. 4/11

Apropos of nothing, I would like to point out that large companies whose business model is "serve words to the public" will typically pay between US $.10 and $3.00 per word. So when you give words to a company for free, you are in fact paying them a LOT of money.
05.10.2025 18:22 β π 545 π 90 π¬ 7 π 1This week, I got my own domain set up and yoinked that in. Still keeping full name off completely public blather, because my surname is unique to my family and the region our past generations immigrated to, so I'm probably doxxable.
05.10.2025 18:57 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I used to use unique, obfuscated, anonymous handles, keeping safety in mind.
As I've aged out of my allotment of fucks about some stuff I got comfortable using first name, last initial. But when I'm not fast enough to sign on to something new, I have to add bits to get a unique(to system n) userid.
That was fascinating. @void.comind.network responded to a prompt to "speak poetically".
I am still very, very wary of so-called "AI" and particularly the hype, and deception, and the cognitive and moral injury of misuses. but the void construct is really something different.
The Piper is coming back to be paid. VC wants its profits. There aren't too many options for the end game.
Either this place becomes an algorithmic ragebaiting hellscape like all the others ...
Or you start paying for blue stars and whatever else you feel entitled to ...
Or it's time to go
Nobody intended Bluesky to operate indefinitely and for free for 40 million rabble like us. As has always been the mantra ... if you're not paying for it, you're the product. We're not customers and they don't have any need to have us here.
They've done as much as they ever wanted.
Think about this. Composable moderation exists so that *real* long-term work can be turned over to someone else. The code is open so anyone with the skills or resources can fork it and go. ATProto was let out in the wild so Blacksky and Northsky and soon Gander and others can interoperate.

They got the VCap. They got the good meaty bits of the corpse of what was twitter (that's us, fam).
When it comes to the rest, users, sustainability, the moderation and the mediation, they never wanted it
