If I have to explain to you why it's a bad idea to use a machine that makes shit up 15-80% of the time AND destroys the environment AND contributes to rising fascism and genocide AND puts brilliant skillful creatives out of work by stealing their work, then we're already speaking different languages

Yes, one of the key things that a writer must do is research, especially legal research on publisings contract as well as general research on how the publishing industry works. Yes, it can be frustrating and tedious, but it's completely necessary.

I've largely had positive experiences with web/magazine editors.

Book editors...One kept breaking promises because he didn't have the power to greenlight books himself and had a chip on his shoulder about it. Another rejected a pitch and then immediately turned around to offer it to someone else

I may have hit a breaking point dealing w/ people in the publishing industry.

There's a lot I haven't shared publicly from the last ~5 years about what I'm *told* was an extreme outlier situation as far as the degree to which I was repeatedly screwed on promised deals, but it may be time to spill.

Yes, as a writer and as an editor, you are absolutely right, and I agree.

Keeping it general for now, but:

Do not believe anything anyone in publishing says w/o a signed, executed contract. Do not believe any promises an editor makes you w/o them putting it in writing. Do not believe anything an agent tells you w/o a signed agency agreement.

Too many of them just lie.
