A lot of people in my profession (environmental law) in Portland (including me) have been trying to get tear gas banned since 2020 after the Portland Police & feds blanketed the entire city with the stuff twice over.

You’ll never guess who opposes banning tear gas!

Some in South Minneapolis have created what they call “filter blockades” on Cedar Ave. A handout says the roundabout like blockade is meant to bring neighbors together to strategize against ICE while also identifying traffic coming into the area.

So, to recap: a good vibes campaign *will not* move the needle on cycling in Portland unless: 1) There is a continuous, connected bicycle network throughout the city; 2) the quality of the network (primarily in terms of safety) is high enough that it 'reads' as a network to the average Portlander.

Land doesn't vote. But oil barons and electric car dealers use your money to buy elections. Meanwhile, your city's traffic Engineers count your car in the model that they cite as why 4-lane stroads you're scared to ride your bike on can't be made safer with bus and bike lanes.

Given those two factors, I think it's time to have the conversation of what role PCEF should play in supporting a transit agency that has been gutted by failed leadership in Salem, what that support looks like, and what guardrails look like.
