Maybe that's where I'm sensing the nihilism of some people is coming from, like they're caught in both the eternal moment of an unchanging present that can only produce an idealized version of what yesterday had the potential to do, and a future that bends all imagined progress backwards in time.

I mean, if you imagine a past that feels better than now despite its actual toll on so many others then, isn't there a cerain level of irony to its emotional impact? So, can't nostalgia also produce the same feelings that a meme does, because they both depend on the decontextualization of memories?

Thinking more about the overlap of nostalgia and meme culure, maybe the old glorification trick isn't getting the results it used to anymore because an idealized past that depends on a certain level of contextlessness is becoming too poisoned by irony to be used as a primer for communal motivations.

I suspected this was the case given how the nudity or adult content label could be fooled with specific changes to brightness in areas, but in researching hive's programming, it's clear to me now why hash matching biases images of trans people towards pornography rather than flagging them as benign.
