George C. Scott really was one of our best, both quiet and roaring when necessary: much like the atmosphere of the film itself. Gacefully bombastic and stylized in its Victorian Gothic architecture while also pleading/despairing in the wailing score and moving investigation.

Hard not to watch THE CHANGELING and just sigh at most modern haunted house fare in comparison. Fucking love Medak’s firm control over the big ghost story theatrics and murder investigation movements of which is centered by the chilly, grieving mood stretched across its runtime.

V/H/S/HALLOWEEN fucking rocks; maybe the entry that works on the whole for the first time in a while since 94. Filled with trick ‘r treat splatter, fuzzy vintage decor, and backyard haunted house shenanigans. Every segment has something cool but Home Haunt is easily one of the best in the series.

Vincent Price rocks in this; flexing himself in a dual role so theatrically bombastic and vile as it is wracked and somber. Corman was such a better director than most ever gave him credit for, him and his creative crew were so attuned to the evocative artifices of this realm.

THE HAUNTED PALACE (1963) is top-echelon Corman/Price collabs; brimming with painted gothic castles, graveyard fog machines, and the assorted nightmarish vocabulary these guys made bank on. Chews on Poe’s sober tragedy but dwells within Lovecraft’s apocalyptic corruption.
