I’m not going to be impressed by Mr Gaunt’s web of manipulation, Steve, if it just boils down to effortlessly hypnotising everyone with his magic powers! It also doesn’t really say anything about the innate darkness of people’s souls or market forces or whatever!

The overall thematic intent seems to be that Americans will sell their little capitalist souls for trinkets and doodads, but the execution is so flimsy. The objects are magic and basically just turn people into Gollums, undermining the theme entirely.

After a long hiatus I’ve resumed my Stephen-King-athon (just in time for spooky season!) and oh god, Needful Things is quite tiresome, isn’t it?

For real though, if you're a fan of amazing games writing you *gotta* keep an eye on Harry's work. No less than three times in the last year I finished something amazing, then looked at the credits and went 'ah yeah, there he is'.

I was really happy with the way the Vagabond’s story turned out - anyone who’s played House of Many Doors knows I love it when an RPG companion has their own agenda, but Failbetter let me dial this up to 11 with Old Tom!
