For the states that had major statewide races, how much would Congressional districts flip under last night's voting patterns?

This is slightly interesting to see but much less exciting than when I just happened to see the Prime Minister of the UK announce her resignation live, from a few dozen meters away.

There was reporting earlier that DPFP may support the LDP on a PM vote so more likely that, but at this point who knows.

Sure looks like some big news is about to break at LDP headquarters. Loads of cops and reporters around, but no other civilians. One reporter with a TV camera told me they're here on a tip but couldn't tell me what about, other than that they're all still waiting for it.

Any predictions?

I didn't go in much but "in front of the Sanjo Starbucks" was a VERY common reference as a meeting point.

At least it was designed to blend in aesthetically reasonably well. And the kawadoko is so nice, if you can get onto it. I haven't even visited the general area the last couple of times I've been to Kyoto.

The Starbucks was definitely there as of 2002, but it may have been pretty new then. Roughly opposite the Lawson, which is on the south side of the street.

On X, Masaki Nobushiro posts a recurring (and useful) drawing about how people wrongly think a 1m tsunami is a cresting wave when it's actually a wall of water filled with dangerous and deadly debris that's strong enough to sweep up a car.

A rule of thumb for tsunamis is that in open ocean, they move at similar speeds to commercial airliners. If you're ever curious how long it would take for a tsunami to get from one place to another, look up the duration of a similar-length flight.

The magnitude has been further refined to M8.8. It may seem like 8.7 and 8.8 are close, but the difference actually means about 40% more energy released. Logarithmic scales will do that!

Right, but I mean if you assume that the election yesterday would roughly map to the support levels of a hypothetical general election (not saying it would, but as a thought exercise) then I still don't think you get a governing coalition.

Absolutely not. If you add together all the parties that are arguably to the left of the LDP/Koumeito, you don't even hit 100. If you extrapolate the trend of these shifts to a hypothetical general election it's not quite impossible but very very very unlikely.

Mishima Yukio in 1948, a year before he published his seminal semi-autobiographical novel, Confessions of a Mask. I don’t think I’ve ever seen him looking so early-Showa-esque. He looks ready to star in the Asakusa vaudevilles. Far cry from the purposefully macho look he’d cultivate until his death.

Nice to see someone writing about legal history who has some understanding of history, unlike the amateur historians that populate the American judiciary and much of American legal academia.

It's particularly bad in law, IMO. The very specific task known as "legal research" is fundamentally about finding cases that cite other cases or use specific keywords. There's very little conceptual analysis and very little discussion of the concept of historical context. Lawyers are bad at history
