Electroconvulsive therapy generates a postictal wave of spreading depolarization in mice and humans - Nature Communications The underlying mechanism of electroconvulsive therapy remains not fully understood. Here, the authors use optical neuroimaging in mice and humans to show that electroconvulsive therapy elicits a secon...

Hot off the press! We found that electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) induces a previously undescribed, second brain event after seizure, called cortical spreading depolarization (CSD), using optical neuroimaging in both a mouse model to human patients. 🧡 below!

Mystery Medicine Monday (best I could come up with):
Propylene glycol toxicity always comes up as a concern with high dose parenteral Ativan, has anyone experienced this in clinical practice? I have given large doses of Ativan and have yet to encounter a case.

regarding the risks and benefits of treatments/interventions. Failing to appreciate the significant, far reaching, neurocognitive impact of depressive illnesses can lead to settling for partial or inadequate treatment responses.

In clinical practice, the results of this study align with what we see: Psychiatric illnesses, especially depressive illness, can have significant effects on cognitive functioning, and adequate appreciation of this reality allows both patients and providers to engage in a more nuanced discussion
