You see a fellow goth comrade from across the club and they scream something to you, even though music is so loud, you can't hear yourself think. Or rather, you see this red shouldered blackbird in the tall green reeds on the far side of a parking lot, and it is clearly squawking something at you, but who knows what. All you know is they look stunning in all black, glossy feathers, black glossy beak, and flaming red to orange epaulettes (upper wing feathers). There's no way they'll still be there by the time you make your way through the crowd (to the other side of the lot). The DJ is playing Bauhaus, Third Uncle, and every. single. goth. is on the dancefloor you have to cross.

Oh, the baby goths. They look good, but they're so insecure. Black juvenile crow in a pecan tree waits for an older sibling to bring it something to eat and tell it what to do. In the meantime, just constant whining and nervous, poseur stance.

Male bronzed cowbird is Nosferatu incarnate. Glossy blue-black feathers with a big display of puffed up chest and shoulder, neck feathers puffed up and out, like a very dramatic vampiric cloak. He stands at attention on a brightly spring-green leafed tree branch. Stands out like Whoa. Beak slightly opened, eyes blood-red. He vants to suck your bloood. Or maybe just have his mate lay some of their eggs in your nest, and let you raise the fledgling vamps while they are out doing elder-goth business. They ain't got no time for kids.

Rose-breasted grosbeak looks like he's doing the walk of shame in the early morning, only in addition to still wearing last night's clothes (a tux by the looks of it: white belly feathers, black head and wings), he's also wearing the blood of his victims (or a spilled cabernet) because bright red stains (red breast feathers) drip down his chest in rivulets. The night must have been intense.

A big round borb of a gray catbird is perched on a thin branch, in dark, early evening tree shadows. A few stray rays of sunlight illuminate charcoal colored feathers, a slicked back black cap, black beak, black feet, and an dark, inky, focus-less gaze. Keeps playing Joy Division on repeat. Could be a cry for help? More likely, he just deep in the vibe. Mope on, catbird! We've all been there.

A cedar waxwing, in profile, clutches a branch of dark green leaves against a grey-blue sky. Its' feathers area a moody ombre, a slowdive of taupey brown, darkening to a warm dark grey. Bright red wax glazes the wing tips, and its tail ends with a surprise dip of saturated yellow. Most striking though, is the swept back coif of feathers that cascade back from the brow, and suspend in an aqua-netted pointy swoosh off the the crown of the head. Looks fast, looks fashion. The eyes are rimmed heavily in Siouxsie influenced, over-drawn, winged black kohl, and this bird's profile is giving you "aloof", "disdainful", "light my Djaruum, and get away from me or else".

Great tailed-grackle atop a lightpole at dusk. Crazy eyed, and scowling down its black beak at a misplaced feather, he'd better not look up and find you staring. This bird is itching for a confrontation. Listens to a lot of Diamanda Galas and Christian Death. Has anger issues and a chip on it's wing. Will peck your face off just because it's bored.

An awkwardly proportioned juvenile bluejay is sitting solemnly on a silver fencepost, against a black background. It's head is molting, so you can see the bird's grey skin, and prickly new feather growth. Much spiky. Ver goth.

A hostile looking, ruby-throated hummingbird with a long, tall stance, is perched on a fig tree branch, in shadow. It appears to have dark eye makeup on, and a few crimson jewels (feathers) have caught the light and sparkle brilliantly in the gloomy atmosphere. Very "hanging out morosely in the shadows of the club, waiting for Skinny Puppy's Smothered Hope to be played so you can stalk onto the dance floor"

A downy woodpecker with black and white feathers on it's body, and a bright red crown, is hunched over a shadowy tree branch and looks up shyly. HI'm pretty sure he's playing Disintegration in his ear buds and just wants to be left alooooone.

Well done!! I've been hardcore bird watching, daily, for ~a year an a half now, and I still can't get my dawn on. If they aren't out in the afternoon, I don't see 'em. :-/ Don't know how to reprogram 50+ years of morning-anguish.
