And since everyone watched it all the time it created a cross-cultural, cross-socioeconomic, international shared formative experience among an entire generation of late Gen X-ers and Elder Millennials.

Unless you lived during the heyday of MTV you cannot possibly understand the stranglehold it had on all of our lives and how it was essentially the only thing we ever watched and we would turn it on and just leave it on for hours and hours and it was just endless incredible content.

I have a lot of care for people who say that this is the best it will ever be, even when I suspect their reasons for saying so is that they benefit from the way we’re all stuck in this competitive loop. They are winning the game, in their minds. Threatening the existence of the game is scary.

It society is designed to keep us all isolated, exhausted, afraid. Then it tells us that this is the best of all possible worlds, that nothing will ever change. If we’re exhausted, where’s the energy for imagining otherwise?

We also need to acknowledge we are here and there are micro-utopias (sometimes limited by time/geography) that exist and are bringing us to something different. It might be 50-200 years but liberation is possible, necessary, maybe inevitable and worth fighting for
