Now seen full episodes of Lord of the Flies and I think it’s genuinely great.

Apart from the soft play it is

An unexpected bonus is making new friends via playgroups and school gates. Our kids are pretty much grown but I still have people in my phone as β€˜Ken Sam’s Dad’ and β€˜Emma Leon’s mum.’ We go to gigs and pubs having shared the horror of the soft play nearly 20 years ago.

Parent & Baby screenings are a godsend. My son peed on me during the third Pirates of the Caribbean film which felt like a reasonable critique

I didn’t much care for Wuthering Heights. Seemed to lack the courage of its convictions. Alison Oliver and Martin Clunes very good though. I think AO is becoming one of my favourite actors (great in Task)

@johnaugust.bsky.social thanks for the conversation with Joachim Trier on Scriptnotes. Made me appreciate Sentimental Value even more, and I already thought it was the best film of the year.

I think this single podcast is as significant as Alexander Mackendrick’s On Directing, Sidney Lumet’s Making Movies or William Goldman’s Adventures In The Screen Trade. If you’re interested in filmmaking/writing it’s essential. And Sentimental Value is magnificent

John Boorman’s Excalibur - taken by my Arthurian legend obsessed brothers in law even though I was 11 and in the UK you needed to be over 14. For a while I thought it was the greatest film of all time.

Reminded me of a phrase you once coined:

Two most recent reads: Ioved the Carlo Levi, a memoir that feels like a novel, vivid characters and sense of time and place. Enjoyed The History of Sound too - don’t usually go for short stories but this was a gift. Written with elegance and economy which is quite the combination. #Booksky

So Charles chipped in for his nonce brother’s hush money whip round. Fuck him. Fuck the lot of them.
