Even in Central NE where I grew up - about equidistant from Denver and Omaha - it always seemed like more of a culture shock to go to Lincoln than the Denver area (culture shock meaning what a kid who didn't get much outside of the Sandhills until he was in his 20s would think of as shocking)

I've always taken issue with the tendency to refer to Western NE as "Midwest" when it is culturally/economically/ecologically much more similar to the Front Range than Lincoln or Omaha.
