paperback of Geoffrey Fletcher's London. Its cover is blue with a black ink sketch of Maxim's Chinese Restaurant (probably a steakhouse by then) in Wardour Street

He wrote a follow-up book which is full of more marvellous things, but I think languishes in obscurity due to its humdrum title. It's The Geoffrey Fletcher's London Nobody Knows , if you will.

One late session in the bar of Jurys Inn during a UKOUG conference in Brum I was discussing the dilemma with another attendee. 'Chelsea definitely', he said. 'Don't inflict Palace on him. My dad made me a Birmingham City supporter like his dad did him and Aston Villa has ruined my entire life.'

When he was little I wanted him to support a local team. Historiucally in South West London that meant Chelsea or Palace.

AFC Wimbledon was still struggling with birth pangs and that seemed like too much of a hard sell. It had to be a PL or Championship team.

Stolen valour obvs, we're not an Eagles supporting household. But as I reminded the Son & Heir there is an alternative universe in which he is a Palace fan.
