Britain’s care system promotes modern slavery. A genuinely humane government would reform it | Andrea Egan New proposals that would force poorly paid migrant workers to wait longer for earned settlement are nothing more than an assault on working-class people, says Unison’s general secretary Andrea Egan

The idea that the gothic revival is β€˜fakery’ is extremely suspect. Yes there were crap examples but also exquisite ones. What about all the wren stuff - yes hugely inventive but also a huge throwback to classical idioms. I would see Barry’s Westminster as a playful gothic fantasy

Not a historic building? The UK has had a terrible track record of underappreciating and flattening its 19th century heritage. See Iain Nairn passim.

I like a radical opinion but London is enough of a shithole as it is…the building must be saved, even if parliament ought to move somewhere more central in the UK.

It’s under fire from left and right – but Labour’s workers' rights bill is a huge achievement | Polly Toynbee It makes no sense for union leaders to cry betrayal when it will be their members who benefit from these sorely needed reforms, says Guardian columnist Polly Toynbee

We shouldn't underestimate how transformative a rise in union membership could be. For working conditions and pay but also the cohesion of society more generally.

Ukip founder Alan Sked: 'The party has become a Frankenstein's monster' He may have founded Ukip, but Alan Sked's moderate, Brussels-boycotting party has gone rogue. Stuart Jeffries meets the academic who's desperate to stop the bandwagon he first set rolling

As for Farage’s use of racist slurs being confined to his childhood - well, that's not what Alan Sked, the founder of UKIP, claimed in this 2014 interview.

He says here that Farage was using the "n" word as late as 1997.

Farage would have been about 33 at time.
