After 9/11, one thing that stood out to this New Yorker was how much far away Americans felt like they had been personally attacked, even people who disdain NYC.

To many New Yorkers, there was a missing landmark, bad air, and personal connections to victims. To Americans elsewhere, it was a symbol.

1) that's highly illegal. 2) there's no proof the people in those boats are involved in the drug trade 3) in a bunch of cases those boats are not headed for the US 4) it's murder regardless.

Life is hard and short no matter what, and there’s nothing of any ultimate importance to be gained for oneself by making things worse for others.

Show me a man who wants to dominate others to make himself feel better and all I’ll see is a child who’s never seen or felt pain up close himself.

My feelings about my military service are complicated and ever evolving, but one thing that I’m certain of is that my experience of war, of doing violence and having violence done to me, all for no reason whatsoever in the end, has left me with an almost crippling empathy for my fellow human beings.

As the good doctor has often said, do your best to not just talk at young one, or around and above them, but engage in conversation with turn-taking. This is so important! Language is about communicating between and among people. It's relational. It's love.

If you provide your child with a rich language environment and they are not meeting expressive and receptive language benchmarks, look into intervention right away. We need to support our kids to make the best of those early years for developing a strong foundation in language.

The best thing a parent can do to support future literacy is to talk to your babies and toddlers -- a lot! Language skills are the real foundation. Use full sentences, scruptuous vocabulary, and idioms. Tell stories with different plot elements. Make silly rhymes, etc. Have fun!
