You can . . . figure out how to make a difference in a hundred ways way I'm not smart enough to list right now. I don't have all the answers, but you are very smart, and I believe in you.

I'll do what I can, too. We're all in this together.

After this, show up for every election. Not crazy about the Democrats on the ballot? I understand. Show up for your favorite in the primary, then show up for the lesser of two evils in the general.

Tell the vulnerable people in your community that they're not alone. Donate even a few dollars to an organization that protects the vulnerable in person or in court: WHO, Doctors Without Borders, World Central Kitchen, your local food bank, the ACLU, the NAACP . . .

Your actions during this time will make a difference. Sometimes that difference will be small, but it will be real.

Stay informed. As painful as it is, keep knowing and speaking the truth. Keep expressing dissent. Let your elected officials know how you feel, especially if they are Republicans.

Don't let anyone minimize what's happening. It's terrible. It isn't legal. It isn't normal, and it won't return to normal in four years. The wounds are too deep.

For Trump himself, I can only assume this satisfies his narcissism and nihilism. Those who want his favor must flatter him. No one else can avoid talking about him. He is immune from prosecution and dangerous to critics. He simply does not care about harming others.

When the pizza is served to us later, the same people who walked over it will ask, "Isn't pizza terrible? Doesn't it taste like dirt?"

Small government ideologues will get a smaller government, but not a better one. Flop a supreme pizza cheese-side down on the sidewalk, walk over it, then scrape what you can back into the box. The result will be marginally smaller, but not more nutritious.

The "basket of deplorables" will cheer for the cruelty directed at Trans people, immigrants (DACA recipients brought here as children, adults who took every possible step to come here legally), overseas recipients of food and medication from USAID, ANYONE who can be labeled a "DEI hire" . . .

The goal of this exercise is different for different players. For the extremely rich and powerful (and aligned with Tump), this is an end to government oversight and accountability. For the merely rich, there will be probably be tax cuts.
