There are very few crops in which farmers have any power at all to control prices

If there were only a couple big firms growing potatoes and they could conspire to drive up prices, that would be bad

But we aren’t seeing that.

The growers themselves have basically no power to set potato prices

In a highly competitive market like soybeans there is no market power

Sellers don’t control prices

They can’t reduce output to boost prices

They can’t sell a fancy brand name to try to squeeze out profits

They just take whatever price is offered

We should be worried about market power, not the nebulous concept of “corporate ownership”
