The story I was told as a teenager is that the priest was having an affair with the woman and killed her. They blamed the crime on a drifter who was passing through the area. That man, Tom Collins, was hanged in Hopewell Cape, the only time someone was hanged in Albert County.

If you drive out the old New Ireland Road about ten miles from Riverside-Albert, you'll find a cemetery in the middle of absolute nowhere. Go to the back of the cemetery, there's a grave for Father McAuley, and his second cousin Mary Ann, the murdered woman.
