I went home to my apartment on the 12th, past police tape at Houston, and barricades at Delancey. The air around and in my building stank like a dumpster fire. I grabbed a few items and headed up to my girlfriend's place in the east village.

We tried to go back to normal.
We're still trying.

Over the coming days and weeks, vigils and ofrendas sprang up all over the city with the photos and names of missing people. As days turned into weeks, and hope waned, the photos remained but they were joined by candles and flowers placed in remembrance.

More news came started to come in. A few friends and a cousin were unaccounted for. Everyone said, "I'm sure they'll turn up at the hospital." even if we didn't believe it.

The next day we went to donate blood but there were already hundreds of people in line. None of us knew at the time there would be almost nobody to give the blood to.

We spent the night on the upper east side at my mother's apartment. Partly because it was out of harm's way but also because I had planned to see her the next day anyway. Everyone glued to the news, checking for updates online, trying to make sense of what was happening.

I walked 12 blocks north to meet my girlfriend (now wife) in the east village. We sat, and hugged, and wondered about our future for a while. We checked text messages and message boards for updates from friends who we knew worked in and near the WTC. Most were safe. Not all.
