Rutgers urban planning student, transit nerd, does some rail/bus advocacy work. Talk to me about trains!

East Broad Top 16, recreated as a somewhat 1:48 scale Lego model.
Made to run on 3 stud gauge Lego track, like its real life counterpart. Engine & Tender come out to 1,440 pieces and Iβm using one Power functions L motor for power.
Really, really happy with the turnout.
This gets 12,000 riders/day. Do we know if they publish annual statistics? Rutgers gets 6.2 million/year (includes Camden and Newark, they don't seem to publish it by campus or route) I'm curious to see how they compare.

Had a visually impaired woman on my bus this morning and my computer was down so I had to manually announce stops. When she got off she said βYou did a great job announcing, itβs nice to know where the Nickel Plate Trail isβ and thatβs just about the best compliment I could receive today

Fun fact I discovered. The first Harris car sets were built in England by the Gloucester Car company, using the same car body as the Toronto Subwayβs G series subway trains used on Canadaβs first subway in a solid red colour scheme. @longbranchmike.bsky.social

I imagine the business case would be a lot more evident if there were currently more than one sleeping car per day. Though given that that sleeping car is full on every run, it may already be.
Genuinely very good to see this quite ideal sleeper service being paid attention to.
Interestingly enough, Thomas Tait, the Victorian Railways commissioner during Melbourneβs suburban electrification, was ex-Canadian Pacific.

Correct me if Iβm wrong but I had the impression that most Elizabeth Line runs on the Great Western were short turns.
06.10.2025 15:11 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0DC<->Baltimore is also quite doable on regional rail at similar(?) frequencies to Reading on the Elizabeth Line. Though in terms of local transit DC is leaps and bounds ahead of Baltimore, and were retrocession to happen would instantly become the largest city in Maryland.

Iβve never seen this before. An elevator call station with a roller blind(?) floor indicator!
01.10.2025 00:43 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0This is actually a really interesting insight into the geometry of the Metro network. Pentagon-Foggy Bottom isnβt a priority because that trip can be done via LβEnfant with the same number of transfers. Meanwhile for some trips from the west it makes more sense to go via Pentagon than Foggy Bottom.
27.09.2025 04:02 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0U.S. regulators worried about safety require larger elevator cars than in Europe. But these rules reduce the number of elevators, exacerbating sprawl and the accompanying dangers.

Of course, the solar panels shouldnβt be on the train.
I appreciate the running theme between these episodes of the decline of US transit being caused by policymakers not considering the consequences of their policies (and trying to pay for them with other peopleβs money).

20.08.2025 05:00 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0There is a potential limitation with they way the door controls work on most NA trains. They're usually separated into front and rear segments relative to where the conductor is located, so selective door operation is dependent on the position of the conductor.
