@diannesaxe.bsky.social @joshmatlow.bsky.social what is this? Why are we making things worse?

Over 1000 have died at track level on the TTC, time to do something about it. Platformdoors.info
@diannesaxe.bsky.social @joshmatlow.bsky.social what is this? Why are we making things worse?
16.10.2025 20:19 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Itβs shocking that Metrolinx would release designs without platform doors in this days and age. Council passed this only a few months agoβ¦
16.10.2025 20:19 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0This is truly the case, because the same number of road users who die every year is about the same(ish) as the number of subway riders who dieβ¦and despite a very clear solution, that has worked elsewhereβ¦the politicians continue to delayβ¦
27.09.2025 13:13 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Building codes require elevator doors, and all we are requesting is that the city hold themselves to the same standard as they do everyone else.
27.09.2025 08:38 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Basically every 12 story building in Toronto has the same or more elevator doors as would be required for a subway platform (24)β¦nobody would say that the cost of elevator doors are too prohibitiveβ¦not even for buildings built before the 1950sβ¦
27.09.2025 08:38 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0As you likely know. Platform doors improve not just safety and reliability of the subway, but also noise levels and air qualityβ¦
26.09.2025 19:15 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0It would be really great to get a subway map version (just the platform levels) and then also a streetcar version would also likely be very helpful for peopleβ¦
26.09.2025 19:14 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0@diannesaxe.bsky.social and @joshmatlow.bsky.social and @cllrainslie.bsky.social can hopefully ask about using lower bay station as a testing ground to speed up implementations and staging when platform doors come to council againβ¦
20.09.2025 14:49 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Toronto has a perfect setup for a test implementation of platform doors, lower bay station would be perfect to ask door manufactures to come and show test implementationsβ¦in other cities they build a platform simulator so that they can do test installations to ensure quick and safe implementations
20.09.2025 14:49 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Somehow Madrid is doing platform doors for 100mβ¬ for 70 platforms (28 stations)β¦Toronto is going to spend 24x that to do 70 stations (140 platforms)β¦ #topoli - we need the board to get to the bottom of this www.metromadrid.es/en/press-rel...
19.09.2025 00:03 β π 2 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0Would be great to imagine what these screens could look like and do if they were embedded in platform screen doors/walls. Weβve seen some pretty great functionality - including βnext car full, use next doorβ signage and interactive mapsβ¦
18.09.2025 23:42 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Please contact your politicians, this can be avoided with platform doors...
18.09.2025 20:47 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0If you want to take it further...it's then like instead of building platform doors, they put up a suicide prevention phone number and somebody goes around taking it down...
18.09.2025 20:44 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0We have a great equivalent...it's like if the TTC had killed over 1000 of it's customers since the subway opened, and has not done anything about it for over 70 years...despite saying safety is their priority...
18.09.2025 20:44 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0The TTC has killed over 1000 of it's own customers...
18.09.2025 20:42 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0In Japan they added a 10 cent fare surcharge at each station when platform doors were added. This safety and performance surcharge is easily explained, another 1/3 of funding came from the federal government from health savings - again extremely easy to explain.
18.09.2025 20:39 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0We have to be willing to collect and spend money on modernization, service improvements, performance and safety improvements across the board. This is best done with specific capital projects that have specific funding mechanisms that are easily explained to the public.
18.09.2025 20:39 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0We could use Canadian steel and Aluminum to build and assemble platform doors here...could be a great product for the North American transit market...
18.09.2025 20:34 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0TTC has produced a video about staying off the tracks, they seem to recognize there is a massive problem with safety...imagine if we had to make "stay out of elevator shaft" commercials, or "don't stand on the rollercoaster tracks" videos...Platform Doors are the solution...contact your councillor!
18.09.2025 20:22 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0A great article that should be informing our decisions on platform doors here in #topoli
12.09.2025 08:48 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Josh we need platform doors, and we need to figure out how to pay for them. Part of that money needs to come from usersβ¦the rest from health savings from the province and first responder savings from the cityβ¦but letβs normalize paying for improvementsβ¦
11.09.2025 12:26 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Would be awesome to get some of these in the subway station. Platform doors can have a massive impact on reducing dangerous noise levels in the subway. Would be good to track it and get some people to speak to the politicians about it.
09.09.2025 18:59 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Really need a post about why Shanghai did doors as wellβ¦
09.09.2025 18:40 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I was excited to write more about the 2003 Daegu subway fire, a critical event in understanding Korean transit. without this truly horrifying tragedy, platform screen doors now seen on all South Korean metro stations may not have been possible 𧡠www.substack-bahn.net/p/how-seoul-...
08.09.2025 19:00 β π 5 π 1 π¬ 1 π 1The Toronto feasibility report linked on our website (website link in bio) has a big section on this and what needs to be done to rectify itβ¦
09.09.2025 18:35 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0If your car and your house have air conditioning and heating, so should your subway stationβ¦the only thing preventing it is a lack of platform doorsβ¦
09.09.2025 18:32 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Also reduces the stress for parents (never teach your kid what a yellow line is, never need to hold their hand in a station, never need to lock the brakes on your stroller), and the air conditioning/heating is a massive driver of increased usageβ¦
09.09.2025 18:30 β π 5 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0new S(ubstack)-Bahn post: 20 years ago, Seoul was haggling over whether to install platform screen doors at its Metro stations. many called it a waste and an impossibility.
now itβs at all Metro stations across South Korea. how did this transformation happen?
www.substack-bahn.net/p/how-seoul-...
Really interesting that the movement for platform doors came first from those hoping to stop deaths on the tracks, and evolved to encompass a recognition that the doors substantially reduced station air and noise pollution.
09.09.2025 18:16 β π 86 π 9 π¬ 4 π 0Fascinating new article about how metro platform doors became ubiquitous in S Korea, in response to health concerns, notably.
βIn South Koreaβ¦ there are 708 train stations [with rapid transit]. All of them have platform screen doors, a stunning achievement for a country which 20 years ago had one.β
