I can't emphasize enough how much your direct action, calling these processors every day, has forced these statements and the news coverage to happen. It's so important that we keep going. There sure is a lot of magical thinking in the idea that computers will just naturally evolve toward it via complexity though.

It's a cool sci-fi idea but its not going to magically appear out of a LLM though. It's just not. Nothing maps.

Not magical. Just very very very complex. And your last statement is a presupposition not proved. We're not there yet. Silicon is not magic either. We don't know enough to know whether or not it can simulate, imitate, or stand in for what brains do.

We're not good enough at understanding how humans think, we don't even have a full enough sample size yet due to bigotry and shit, in order to map that model onto a machine.

We're just not there yet. In any respect.

And TBH I'm way more interested in making sure everyone we already know is human gets treated as humans and fully included in our definitions of cognition and humanity before we worry about some still extremely distant future where we map those definitions onto machines.

We don't fully know, isn't it a grand mystery? We barely understand human cognition. We do know some things that its not, and things that its not like. The mechanist models fall woefully short.

It really doesn't. It's just a series of pre-set-up causes and effects. A complicated one with branching paths, but it doesn't "understand" things any more than a line of dominos or a rube goldberg machine, even if the domino you push over and the last one that falls in sequence have words on them.

With her sweet temperament and our recent identification of her as a spotnose morph, spouse and I are calling her Sweetspot, usually just Sweetie for short. The kids are still calling her Cyntessa but that's okay. Long pet long name and it's not like she's ever going to respond to it anyway lol

The Sudden Snake Situation continues to go very well actually! I hope to have some more pics soon (been in a flare that knocked me flat this week, alas) but our new noodle is adapting very well to her new situation. Ball pythons are such cool creatures! And she's got a great temperament for a pet.

For sure, give it a try. And if it doesn't gel for you, YouTubers are still an option. Even after playing it myself I love watching other people play it for their first times, since I can't have another first playthrough myself.

For sure if cryptograms and verbal logic aren't your jam there are plenty of other worthy games and general life activities to spend your attention on 😊

It took me nearly 120 "days" (runs) to get to the final (known) goal. Plus some paper and pencil homework. And I wrote a python script to handle something that iterated more than I wanted to do by hand...

BUT you can get to the first ending in a much shorter time and without the extra homework.

Maybe see if you can borrow or demo it because if the main play loop is something you'd find aggravating to run ~100 times no matter what kinds of interesting mysteries layer up inside it, (and there's more to nearly literally everything than you see at first) it might not be worth it for you

Then there are the Parlor and Dartboard puzzles which you run into a lot but are short and reward resources that make your run easier but that you can also get elsewhere. But they're also training for deeper puzzles.

And again there's not a lot more I can say without spoilers.

It doesn't line up a bunch in a row the way The Witness does. There are a ton of different depths (that again in not sure how to explain without spoilers.)

There's the main roguelite play loop where you build out the manor with a lot of rng to see how far you get that run.

Since you own it already, it might be worth giving a shot. It does give you plenty of space (literally lol but also narratively etc.) to practice and get better before asking you to do anything very difficult. Exploration is very open. Hard to say more without spoiling things.

Outer Wilds does rely a lot on its flight mechanics. I almost noped out because the practice RC ship and zero-g training areas were frustrating. The real thing was easier. I also found keyboard and mouse much better even though the game suggests you use a controller. Also everyone crashes. A lot lol

The puzzles in The Witness are all very abstract, I can totally see why it's not fun for everyone. Blue Prince is more slowly gathering clues, decoding cyphers, logical deduction, double meanings and lateral thinking. Just so you have a bit more to go on to decide if you want to play or not.

Subnautica is an awesome game too. One of the top ones that I say I'd love to be able to play for the first time all over again. (Outer Wilds is one of those too.) But I don't think it left me with as much to mull over afterward as the first three I listed. Different kind of experience.

Gonna be chewing on the experience Blue Prince left me with for a while. It definitely joins The Witness and Outer Wilds as a game that left me different after playing it. All in very different ways.
