That it would be seen a cynical photo op by many is not surprising. And im not surprised by it but I do feel the comfort for the minister to so visibly visit a place with one of the longest established DPOs and not engage is pretty telling about far we have to get to get that respect off paper.

Its pretty insensitive to tour about how much money your giving to service providers following a budget that leaves disabled people worse off and a week after voting against even the small bandaid of emergency payments, and then to meet with the local DPO yer own policy says to centre.

I do give some leeway that people are still getting used to recognising and engaging with dpos and may not even know they should yet. But Foleys department does, its literally their strategy developed with DPOs that lays this out. She and her dept knows we exist more then any other.

Normal Foley came to Sligo. She visited disability service providers but not Sligo Disabled Persons Organisation. Her own policy is to centre DPOs and she ignored the local dpo. What message are we to take from that about how DPOs are valued in practice?

So the government are claiming Met Eireann didn't do enough to warn us about weather impacts a few days out?
If that's the case, I'd love to see how they've responded to the warnings climate scientists have been raising for decades. #spรฉirgorm

Even leaving aside climate crisis the way local and national governance seems constantly unprepared for the normal completely predictable seasonal weather issues never ceases to surprise me.

Hi. I haven't cycled a bike in 50 years since kids were rolling hula hoops down empty lanes with a stick but here's why I think cyclists should shut the fuck up and wear inflatable high vis sumo vests or get in a fucking car

There is so much medical model thinking from all sides here that really needs to be unpacked. I cant trust normal foley prioritises disabled peoples interests , but these schools are openly talking in terms which go completely against rights based approach, and thats concerning.

Ok. You're right. But why stop at cyclists? Let's make pedestrians wear high-vis and helmets too! It's safer right? Actually, let's make absolutely everyone wear high-vis and helmets at all times everywhere (except people in cars obviously!) so people driving cars feel better

That sounds like the most relevant and appropriate thing that could be said at any workplace in January. I haven't had a meeting this month were at least one person hasn't expressed the same sentiment so yer fine!

All I want is a paper that tells me the news, isn't in thrall to corporate interests/PR, doesn't both-sides everything, doesn't align with or platform fascism, and doesn't launder right wing talking points or associated bigotries (currently in particular anti-trans bigotry)

Is that too much to ask?

Flooding is only going to get more extreme as climate breakdown worsens.
It's so important that we don't let the most clueless people try to fix this by dredging and channelling...it only makes flooding worse but does make it look like there's lots of work being done.

Medical and charity models
YouTube video by ILMI - Independent Living Movement Ireland Medical and charity models

Its important to learn about the social model, but to understand that, we first have to understand the current perspective , the individualised 'medical model' of disability which narrates disability as personal failing and locates disabled people as passive objects of pity and charity.

We should be moving to European alternatives as well. Reliance on the U.S leaves us vulnerable in too many ways to list.

Folks. Please do this NOW. It takes less than two minutes.
Keep it short and sweet. Something to the effect of "Switching to targeted measures leaves disabled people worse off until such measures are introduced. It is only right that we address that deficit with an emergency payment". #spรฉirgorm 1/2

Retiring Sligo school principal points to the challenges of the internet for young people A popular Sligo school principal brought down the curtain on a 40 year teaching career when he finished his final day last Friday.

Ironic.
May 25, amid heightened far right stuff, he spread "foreign guy going after kids" rumour as an official email to parents.
A safety alert naturally spread wider.
It was not only inaccurate the guy was the victim in what had happened.
The school never took accountability, blamed the parents.

The amount of developments being prevented in Sligo due to being on a flood plain has been called โ€œscandalousโ€.

The comments were made by Cllr Paul Taylor who highlighted that itโ€™s an issue occurring across the country.

Itโ€™s understood that a farmer was unable to build on his own land due to it being a flood risk.

Cllr Taylor says the chance of flood is highly unlikely and not a good enough reason to stop housing.

There just isnt a way to approach immigration policy with irish unity and thus decolonisation as a foundational worldview and ever come to the dodgy places that Matt Carthy frequently choses to end up. Something only facilitated by the exact same problem with sinn feins policy approach.
