This photo shows both the West End (where mansions were replaced by apartments) and Shaughnessy where the province+city have successfully resisted that for over a century

More SF neighborhoods want to be β€˜historic.’ YIMBYs are upset Neighborhoods seeking historic status have become the latest flashpoint in the intense debate over building more housing in California.

As state law removes traditional exclusionary mechanismsβ€”i.e. zoningβ€”NIMBYs are increasingly pushing for historic preservation designations that achieve the same ends. We really need reforms to the process here. sfstandard.com/2025/06/30/s...

Good! Ships delivered on time, on budget should be all we care about. Politicians will continue to try their hardest to ensure procurement across Canada remains god awful, but this was the right decision by BC Ferries.

The federal government's Canada Infrastructure Bank will provide BC Ferries with a loan of up to $1 billion toward the cost of the China-built new major vessels.

These low cost loans will avoid $650 million in interest. #cdnpoli #bcpoli #vanpoli

Complaints to the city about real issues? Takes months to resolve, if ever.

Former city councillor gets called out by a sign? Handled overnight on high priority.

When The City says doesn't fix your street or park, it's not that they can't. Its that you aren't a priority.

This Canadian city has become a leader in building housing. As Toronto debates sixplexes, is there anything it can learn? As Canada’s biggest city debates sixplexes, Alberta’s capital is on track to meet pre-pandemic affordability targets.

Edmonton has done more than any other city in Canada to legalize gentle/missing middle density (8 units per lot AOR, no parking minimums) and the results: "across Canada is the only major city on track to build enough housing to get back to pre-pandemic levels of affordability."

Hey folks, we built enough so that rents are coming down ever so slightly. It’s a slippery slope.
The best time to stop building was yesterday but the second best time is now.

Senakw only seems particularly large if you think that the boundary of what is "downtown" should remain perpetually frozen for all time.

I want BC to select the best contractor to deliver the ships on time and on budget. The province needs new ferries, not endless bureaucracy and make work projects. This is why Canadian procurement is horrendous

Hey Brett has anyone asked Canada Action/LNG lobby for comment. Hasn’t their entire campaign/model been built around replacing β€œdirty coal” with Canadian LNG? This has been a CDN conservatives priority for addressing emissions. Really falls apart when they can’t even convince a province in Canada

Don’t let anyone tell you that electricity supply (generation) is a barrier to EV transition. That’s simply not true.

Distribution network capacity… now that’s a different story (yet also resolvable). But bulk generation is not a real issue.

New CMHC study finds Canada needs to increase annual housing starts from 245K to 477K to return to 2019-levels of affordability.

Of that extra 232K/yr, they find nearly 3/4 should be owner-oriented housing.

What continues to be ignored is how did we get here? Why do Carney and Eby feel they need this legislation? Is it because it’s impossible to build in this country? Everything becomes bogged down in endless assessments, court challenges, committee hearings, bureaucracy delays, and cost overruns.

Quoted passage from Minister Jeremy Harrison's letter to SaskPower staff: "Work will begin this year to restore Boundary Dam 4 to service and be re-certified. Further investments will be made in long-lead items as a part of the life extension project. In the years to come, all coal units at Boundary Dam, Poplar River and Shand will receive the work necessary to extend the life of those units."

Minister Jeremy Harrison has just directed SaskPower to rebuild its coal-fired power plants and continue running them past 2030. The letter directs SaskPower to begin by putting Boundary Dam unit 4 back in service. This decision is problematic for many, many reasons and I list some of them below:
