🧵 Hey, all. I'm going to be doing some test runs of both campaigns I'm running for startplaying.games .

(I'll be checking in with a few of you I've talked to for playtesting soon!)

Do I think I'm going to fill all these slots I have open? Absolutely not, especially not at first.

Still SO much to get ready. But now I can start trying to get some players (and hopefully, a little income).

I'm trying to go with 1pm CST (which is 7pm for those in the UK) and 7pm CST (which is 7pm for me).

I'll also be running some one-shot adventures and maybe dipping my toes into PbP (play-by-post) just to see what works -- but one step at a time.

The second is "Divine Family Matters", which features demigods trying to save humanity from the infighting and narcissism of their parents.

The first is "Lords of Video Land" - which is basically Captain N: The Game Master except with D&D characters instead of a kid with a pause button and a zapper.

Well, that's two campaigns launched on startplaying.games .

11/ Not what I planned to be doing this fall, but when life hands you lemons, you have an owlbear make you lemonade.

10/ If you've got any experience with roleplaying in a paid setting, either as a player or GM, I'd love to hear about it (either in the comments or privately).

9/ I want to give people experiences they're not going to get other places, and I'm sure I can do that. Whether they're GOOD experiences... well, that will take some effort. There's a lot to worry about and a lot to prepare before any games get launched.

8/ I'm also considering doing one-off events somewhat akin to the ones my Stupid Ranger and Critical Hits compatriots used to do at Gen Con nearly two decades hence (not that I can remember much :) ), although much more often and varied.

7/ Despite this, that's my plan. I'll run ongoing campaigns, for sure.

6/ Using it live is much different than doing it in a weekly column. It's even more different when you don't know who your audience will be, and more so when you don't know who your audience will be several times a week.

5/ That either works really well, or it doesn't.

4/ The fact is, if I intend to stand out in the sea of other game masters, I'm going to have to play to my strengths, and the one major thing I'll have that others won't is my WTF generator.

3/ I've gotten much better at crafting long-term stories (or so my book leads me to believe), and organizing characters and locations and other stuff should translate pretty easily. That's not the part I'm worried about.

2/ I have several friends who have done this to great effect ( @dmbobyo.bsky.social comes immediately to mind). I hope I can do that too. I'll have to shake the rust off a bit, and it's going to be rough, especially at first.

🧵 So, I've been sans job for about three months now, and that sucks. So, while continue to try to find one, I have decided to try something I hadn't considered to supplement my income: being a paid game master on @startplaying.bsky.social .

Almost certain the answer is "write something new", but it never hurts to ask. Unless it does, I guess.

Just writing this post makes what I'm asking sound absurd. I'm probably up a creek and have to write something else. I would just like some income since I don't currently have any, and I was hoping this was going to be a source (albeit a little one).

Published author friends: I know generally publishers don't touch books that have already been self-published. What about books that have been, but only sold a handful of copies?

I mean, it got good reviews from the people that read it. Even people I don't know!

Again, I ask: If you've got any leads on jobs, particularly remote and/or in IT, please let me know. Thank you to everybody who's been kind enough to send me leads.

This began a weird little game with HR that ended with me getting let go with pay for two months.

Today starts my official unemployment, and I just found out I can't work there again for 6 months. As they're the biggest employer around here, this, well, sucks.

As you may have heard, I was let go from my job a couple months ago. I didn't talk much about the circumstances, but my manager (not Josh Dalcher, who was always the best) gave me a good rating and then decided I didn't know Java all within the span of a month.

I need to get employed again before I lose my mind @_@
