News from this side: babies who are nearly toddlers are exhausting; 6.5 year olds appear to have some prepubescent emotional rollercoaster thing that happens at this stage; In The Night Garden is still trippy AF; smutty romance books and Critical Role are a fine way to disassociate.

Have been avoiding this place quite a lot during mat leave but here I am back at work for a month so I suppose I should engage the single brain cell again. I do wish everything was a bit less shit though? Might be easier to digest.

OH BOY am I not used to going into town for work. Today I have: nearly missed my train, spilt my coffee on my shirt, left my headphones in the car, and sent a frankly unhinged number of exclamation marks in response to an email (albeit an exciting one). Going great, yep yep yep.

Literally sitting in a darkened room because I can't be bothered doing anything. Up to and including turning a light on. Oh Sunday.

I've had a few hard days with family things and came on Bluesky for *checks notes* a bit of distraction and found that Clarivate is screwing academic libs over even more than usual in an anticipated but still disappointingly corporate manner. Yes good plan very relaxing doomscroll well done me.

Don't really do valentine's but Disco Stu and I got married ten years ago tomorrow so that's pretty cool. It's been a heck of a year and I'm appreciating him more than ever just right at this moment.

He's a luddite with almost negative social media presence but feels nice to tell the world anyway.

Been up for 21 hrs and somehow am still going? Back where I started in Smallest's room trying to get her to sleep so I can too. But in between we did eight modes of transport, a lot of coffee and snacks, five taskmaster tasks, won a medal, was delayed for an hour and started making a hat. Phew!

Super long day where my alarm was set for 3.30am has started well, with Smallest waking me at 2am after approximately 2 hours broken sleep and she's only settling back down now. So. We begin!

Fortunate, really, that that's the name of the Taskmaster Event thingy we're doing. Could be delicious, could be a hodge podge of fuckery. It's a roll of the dice.

Going on a day long trip to London tomorrow with my brother. We do hang out every month or so but it's been a looooong time since we've had an adventure just the two of us and I'm both excited and ready for it to be an Absolute Casserole.

A cup of coffee in a beautiful handmade coffee cup sits on a coaster on a shelf. The cup is particularly pretty with a pink, purple and teal drip glaze on the outside and copper inside.

Just made a coffee in the mug I use for tea. Had to swap over to a specific cup which was more correct for coffee.

It all went as well as these things can, but now we're locked in our usual bedtime battle of convincing the tired baby to sleep. Good thing I'm more stubborn than her, bad thing is she tests my resolve every night.

Librarians aren't going to save us. Librarians aren't superheroes.

They're just people trying to keep largely underfunded and overwhelmed public services going.

Praise is nice; realistic expectations are better; material support is best.

online communities are so strange because people slip away so easily. you can be on here for years, folding people you've never met into the fabric of your daily life, and then they disappear, leaving only ghost posts scattered across tumblr behind. or their blog stays dormant, for weeks, months, years, until you're only still following them because you remember that they love sunflowers or they were kind to you when they didn't have to be or the last thing they posted as sad and raw and you still worry about them sometimes.

and sometimes they come back when you least expect it, years later, even, and there's this sudden rush of relief like there you are, there you are, even though you barely knew each other.

there's a strange kind of love to it. i don't know you and i want to hold your hand across miles and time zones and oceans. i can still see the imprint of you in this community you left. you don't think anyone will notice or care when you're gone, but we notice and we care and we wish you well.

i hope you're all okay out there. i hope the sun is shining on your face and you are breathing deeply. i miss you.

Taking a baby to a funeral today so this is going to be a wild grief and logistics rollercoaster. Her nap this morning has already been delayed and I'm wondering if this will send the day into a tailspin but WHO'S TO SAY, the tiny chaos goblin bends to nobody's will but her own.

I just... Like access? To a range of materials? And probably our students would too?

I know I know, budgets. But I work with a School which spends a lot and honestly sometimes I think they could just share a bit more around. Or create and use OERs? Or even be aware of who they're publishing with.

Ramping up for my return to work and realising my year tending to Not Libraries has left me with some quite unpopular takes.

I mentioned to a colleague that I liked that our academic lib had a fiction offering on Libby now. That was apparently not a popular opinion, because budgets. ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

No! They got done today, late morning. So we could've waited, but actually Stu put them out at midnight that day so we were ready anyway.

...have power to say things to mgmt that staff cannot. So you could have a v positive impact by leading a pilot that staff could take forward. Or refuse to do something as "this requires someone with staff responsibility". Also you can't be fired! So, there can be positives for the service too!
