If the choices are "the government passes a funding bill with no Democratic votes" and "passes the same bill, only with D votes to preserve the filibuster," what's the use of it?

If the choice is between "no filibuster" and "a filibuster you're unwilling to use to your advantage," then at least the former will be of use to you the next time you're in the majority. The latter only constrains you without imposing the same constraints on your political opponents.

Should Democrats vote to abolish the filibuster when the Republicans are in power? Of course not.

Should they refuse to filibuster a bill because otherwise Republicans will abolish the filibuster? If they're not willing to do that, does the filibuster even exist for Republican legislation?
