18.05.2025 22:29 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Much more important, given how slow-moving prostate cancer normally is, it's already metastasized to his bones.

18.05.2025 21:22 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I have friends planning to move there this fall. But 1) I understand this to be a loosening, not a tightening, and 2) they're working with an Irish immigration attorney, so I shouldn't panic on their behalf until told otherwise.
15.05.2025 19:20 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Not the only example. But thanks, at least this one really is fairly obscure.
(I was recommending books for the college bookstore in the mid 70s, so actually seeing the catalogs, on top of my personal buying).
You are damaging to my self-image! I had this belief that I was familiar with the vast majority of titles and authors active in the 60s and 70s, and you pop out enough books that don't sound familiar (even the author) to damage that. (NOT "have read", just familiar.)
15.05.2025 15:54 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 03/ "Sapient" means notably wise. It's asking a lot. (Or, even less usefully, it means related to humans.)
15.05.2025 15:41 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 02/ "Sentient" means able to sense things, so it clearly includes all mammals...but arguably it goes all the way down to plants, which respond to sun movement and such.
15.05.2025 15:41 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0We need a word between "sentient" and "sapient".
For use in SF. "Human" is used in general English, but we need a word that isn't species-specific.
I thought it was deep-dish most of the year, but Greek style thin-crust during Passover? No, wait, sorry, wrong ancient religion.
08.05.2025 18:23 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0In my case, Patrick O'Brian's books. But it's quite appropriate to the period, and one of the main characters *is* a Catholic.
08.05.2025 18:19 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0And we created a state named "Maryland" pretty early. Kind of gestures towards less religious conflict, but everybody wasn't onboard.
08.05.2025 18:18 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0I would agree. It's a "C" type job, subject to the pressures and risks of operating at the top of the hierarchy, which takes special kinds of restraint and thought. (Maybe other reasons too.) ("C" as CEO, CFO, etc.)
08.05.2025 18:13 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Standards are high. Doesn't it require a heart *and* a brain *and* courage?
08.05.2025 18:08 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Substantive bad reviews are a treasure trove! Generally, they are actual objections that real people had, and generally I can tell in moments if they're relevant to me or not. (Pointed out by a friend in a comment elsewhere, but seems worth propagating.)
08.05.2025 18:04 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Yeah, I've never had bandage -changing neighbors. We trade some sidewalk-clearing and such, is about it.
06.05.2025 20:32 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0These ought to be in good shape for some time yet! (And yet they taste stale.)

And the new phone camera is better than the old one.
New phone focuses a lot closer than old phone, that's great!

21.04.2025 22:18 β π 2 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0Well, I couldn't turn at least as much because of healing abdominal incisions as because of bed constraints. They'd set me up half on one side with a pillow behind me to hold me, which helped just a little.

12.04.2025 01:43 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0The fantasy-leaning side of the readership might well list The Dragon Waiting as his best. While I liked it...I'm SF leaning.
Also, I don't know the real history well enough to appreciate where Mike is altering it and where he is not properly.
Here's a collection of links to his posts on Making Light, including quite a lot of his excellent poetry.

@darlingaxe.com That is the most amazingly wonderful business name, by the way!
